Hi all,
Ive made a few posts on here inquiring about the process and steps toward moving to Korea. Everything has taken a little longer than expected, but it does look like I will be going sooner than later. Im not sure what city Im going to be in, but I do know that I will be teaching in Chungnam. I havent found too much research on Chungnam, and I tried to search the forums but my browser freezes on the results page. From what I understand, its more rural than other parts of South Korea. That doesnt really bother me. Having lived in conjested North American cities like Atlanta, San Francisco, and San Jose, I dont mind a change of scenery. I know this is a question that is strongly contingent upon what part of Chungnam Id be living in, but roughly how far/long is Chungnam from Seoul?

I am going to be in Buyeo.
I've read some of the threads here on the city, but they were sort of vague. Is anyone living in Buyeo or has lived there in the past 5 years?
It looks small. Only around 90,000 people. I couldn't find much transportation information about the city, but it looks like the train does not go through the city? Seems to be about a 90 minute bus ride from Daejeon and 2 hours from Seoul.
Are most of the people there elderly and young children?
How is life in rural Korea? I've heard both good and bad. Hopefully there will be a few other expats there. |

Buyeo is very small. Very small for Korea. It only takes about 40 minutes to drive there from Daejeon so not sure how long on a bus. Life in rural Korea is what you make of it, as is life everywhere. You will find a few other foreigners there certainly but not many. It is a sleepy town.
You are very close to lots of good hiking and nature experiences but you are not going to have any city experiences there. It depends on what you prefer. Bring a lot of books.
good luck |
