I've been reading around a bunch, looking at wikitravel, hostel reviews, and daves but am still torn. Help me decide.

It'll be me and my girlfriend. For one week from xmas to new years. peak season I know, but am willing pay around 200,000 or a little more per night.

Will spend a night in phuket, in Kata, then venture to the islands. We want peace and quiet, and a nice sea breeeze, but we don't want to be too isolated though, and it seems like all the best resorts on ko phi phi are far away from the main scene, and traveling on the longtails might be a bit costly.

My girlfriend is also fairly petrified of bugs, so I know there's not much I can control about that, but less buggy equals easier for the both of us.

Seems in general like the hotels on Koh Lanta have better service than those on Ko phi phi. And it seems like koh lanta is close to some really gorgeous diving and snorkeling spots, which we would love to visit, and would probably be our main activity, though i could see us having a few nights out on the town.

Anyways, my buddy is really selling Ko phi phi as he just came from there last month. I'd like to follow his advice, but I just can't decide...

For the short time you will be there and the fact that you are willing to go high end rather than back-packer = flip a coin and pick one.

You will be happy either way.

Since you're going at peak season, I think Koh Lanta is the better choice.

koh phi phi will be pretty crowded then?

I've read a number of complaints about noisy beach parties, and that's just the kinda annoyance we're trying to get away from...

Hard to avoid the bugs. First bungalow (moved out after the first night) I had in Koh Lanta had a nice cockroach population. The snakes are scarier, though.

Ko pi pi = more expensive, very small island, very pretty!!
Can hire private long tail and go to pi pi lei (where they filmed the beach). Costs 20 bux and you get him for 4 hrs (gotta haggle a bit for the price though)

Ko Lanta= much bigger, rent a scooter and see the island. Cheaper accomodations and way more to choose from. Very friendly people and more locals.

Overall, Ko pi pi is an escape from civilization, Ko Lanta is bigger but not as "idylic"

Both great places to see, but for my two cents if you and your girl want a more romantic getaway then go to pi pi.

I think I'm leaning towards Ko Lanta. Pictures of Ko Phi Phi on Traveladvisor make it seem a bit crowded. Though those cliffs look amazing. I've read that there is some pretty good diving and snorkeling not too far away from ko Lanta too. Anyone got information on that?

Got any recommendations on places to stay?

Anyone ever stay during the holidays and have to pay for the compulsory "Holiday banquet" which often costs as much as one night in the room. I'm trying like hell to avoid one of those places as it seems like simple highway robbery...

I stayed at a place on Koh Lanta called "Where Else." Bamboo and straw bungalows. Cold water, shower/sink/toilet in a semi-outdoor bathroom (toilet is covered by a partial roof but the shower isn't). Fan/light/electricity available. It has a bed with mosquito net. http://www.lanta-where-else.com/

Nice place, but not like a proper resort with all the amenities (read: straw and bamboo bungalows).

Never been to Koh Lanta but I did find Phi Phi to be too crowded with trust fund pseudo hippy go native types. Plus the abundance of atm's, half finished construction work and KFC's etc put me off so I went elsewhere.

Gorgeous natural scenery and stunning waters though.

That was in 2007 btw, so said half finished construction sites might be finished now!
