When I first came to Korea I was surprised there were no Iphones or Ipod touch. They were already out in the USA, but every Korean said Korea phones are superior to the Iphone.
Now every Korean is on a waiting list to buy an Iphone.
Why the sudden change and interest in the Iphone. What happened to the Korean dominance of hand phones?

It's because rich people in America own them. That's about it.

It's because the iPhone only came out like 9 months ago.

The Korean chaebol delayed the introduction of smartphones for as long as possible in Korea because they wanted to keep on selling all the stuff that smartphones replace.....MP3 players, PMP's, digi-cams, camcorders, GPS navigation, dictionaries.....etc....that's why Korea is so late to the smartphone party.

Then KT decided they would carry the iPhone. This forced Samsung and LG to bring out smartphones. They didn't want to. They were liking the market as it was. They hate that people will buy just one device now instead of 5 things.

I'm endlessly amused at how cutting-edge Koreans think they are with their new smartphones.......they're 3 years behind the rest of the world!! But they're oblivious to that.

That's the power of marketing I suppose.

because they are the "flavor of the month".

Korean phones have their advantages, however when the iPhone came along it vastly surpassed all they have done (copied).

They boasted that their phones could play video/TV, and other phones couldn't --> iPhone/Droid can

They boasted that their phones could store mp3s and other phones couldn't --> iPhone/Droid can

They boasted that their phones had fantastic cameras with X.x megapixel --> iPhone/Droid have them too.

in fact, the main thing is that their phones didn't have all those "extras" together. iPhone/Droid does.

You could by iPhones in 3rd world African countries before you could in S. Korea. Korea was way behind the times and had to catch up.

That, and iPhone kicks the shiznit out of every Korean phone on the market.

Ghetto poor people in the USA have them, too, it's not just a rich thang.

They're like the borg. All connected via one super connector. You tell one, you tell them all.

You could also use any iPhone bought anywhere in the world anywhere else, except Korea.

Basically, Koreans figured their Samsung smartphones were amazing. Then they actually saw my iPhone and within a minute or two of using it decided it was better.

It didn't surprise me in the least that they went crazy when the 3Gs arrived.

Umm...fact is, Korean AND Japanese phones were pretty crappy. Yes, they had tons of features and tech, but most of it was stuff people never even used.

The Iphone put a limited but USEABLE set of tech into a user friendly package. Neither Korea nor Japan has been able to do this. Haven't you noticed they're all using Android? It's because for the life of them, they haven't been able to create anything as user-friendly as iOS or Android.

It's called "sour grapes." When you can't have something but you try to make yourself feel better by saying you didn't want it anyway.

But now, they can has.

iPhone 3Gs has a nice cameras, iPhone 4 has a fantastic camera now.

iPhone 4 also has video call, and it is much simpler than on Korean phones.

DMB is absent but (for me anyway) mitigated by transferring stuff that I want to watch to the phone's storage.

really? I saw the subway full of koreans daily watching DMB TV on their cellphone.

my 2.5 year old korean cell phone could multitask. A button brought up an overlay menu where you could choose many of the other features without closing the one you were in (very useful if you had to access the dictionary or subway map while sending a text message). That was 2.5 years before Apple did it, and apple is still relying on all the 3rd party app developers to build the function into their app.

my phone has t-money built into it. Very handy for using the subway or anything else. Should I ever find myself somewhere without cash and my t-money empty, I can charge refill to my cellphone with an app on it.

It's so simple it only works on wifi.
Video call on my phone is pretty simple. Open the phone book, scroll to the name, push the video call button on the side of the phone, done.

I don't know how you could make it any simpler unless Jobs himself walked along beside you and pushed the buttons for you. Perhaps that is what he does and that is why you wrote that.

You're hardly the target audience for Korean satellite TV, nor is our demographic really representative of the majority in Korea.
