Is South Park Season 14 episode 9 a South Korean allusion? I was told this recently so went to visit it. Not convinced, but it is a good question. Confused

According to Wikipedia, the episode parodies Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and Jerseylicious.
They can't prove it by me, because I've never seen any of those.

There was only one parody that I recognized.
Kyle is in the bathroom, turning into a Jerseyan while his mother bangs on the door.
Kyle unwillingly opens the door and sees his mother looking like a Jerseyan.
That reminded me of the similar scene in Teen Wolf.

There is only one allusion to Korea that I have seen:
In one episode, it is revealed that the police chief can't read.
At one point in the episode, he sees a stop sign which says 멍청이.

This episode from Season 4 references Korea briefly: http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s04e17-a-very-crappy-christmas

The kids are making their own cartoon about Christmas and at 16:05 they ship their cutouts off to a Korean animation sweatshop to get animated and filmed.

I love when people are anal and idiotic at the same time. The Confused alludes to sarcasm...

...and, yes, "its" a good question...from a kid who knows the difference between "its" and "it's."

Thanks Mr. English teacher Shocked

Its no wonder you're here teaching (sorry, felt that it would be easier to communicate in YOUR LANGUAGE).

Try playing fair next time or just keeping your trap shut and your pointer away from the submit button. Wink

I can't for the life of me think of any reason why the writers would try to incorporate some kind of dig on Korea in what is clearly a lampooning of a completely American phenomenon. Sounds like someone is really projecting here...like trying to catch fart in the wind.

When I was at home in August the Jersey Shore crap was EVERYWHERE. If some ad wizard in Korean tourism/culture propaganda could figure out how to get the kind of exposure and penetration those dbags in Jersey have, he'd have a statue between Sejong and Soon-shin in Gwanghwamun.

I had heard they were going to make a Korean version of these shows, so maybe SP is just way ahead of the curve?

South Park is absolute garbage these days. It's embarrassing to watch, which is a shame because it used to be the most hilarious thing around. I used to wait on pins and needles for a new episiode. Now they're all just horrible. That show needs to die now.

I'll throw in the counter-argument that South Park has been on a winning streak for about 7 or 8 seasons now.

The old episodes don't hold up well, most of them being really lame gross-out toilet humor.

Now Matt and Trey have grown up, and are able to satirize much better, which their audience has done as well. Their skewering of American culture remains second-to-none. The people who watched it for the stupid show about a kid who died every episode and who used cuss words all the time have "matured" at the same rate as the show creators and are still watching.

+1

Whenever I want to watch South Park online, I skip the first four or five seasons. I like how Cartman has "matured"...... per se Laughing

While I'll admit that this season has felt a little flat, what amazes me about recent South Park seasons is how each episode is such a snapshot of American/world culture. The episodes are timely almost to a flaw in that if you watch many of them a few years later they're just not as funny because our collective cultural dialog has moved on/changed.

South Park, in my book, is a mandatory addition to any turn-of-the-century time capsule.

Now this is where I disagree.

The show was more intelligent, plus it actually managed to be funny, around the middle of its run. The characters aren't the same anymore and the whole thing just seems forced. They take one little piece of pop culture each episode and just beat it into the ground, running the same unfunny joke for the whole episode. They throw in some cheap special effects, bad voice acting, cliches and some stupid joke that's not even funnny like Cartman singing Lady Gaga. WTF!? Cartman used to be hilarious and now he just does cheap jokes. His voice is just annoying now too.

The last good episode I've seen was the two-parter where Cartman ends up being transported into a future where atheists are fighting each other. That one managed to have good insight plus be funny.

The new ones are basically the equivalent of TMZ.

Was anyone able to read the sign on the wall?
All I could get was "일합 . . ."
