|

I'd like to know around how much an Epik teacher makes per year. I know there is a 300k won entry allowance and a 1.3million won sign on bonus. First timers make around 1.8 - 2 million per month. How much more is possible from after school classes and winter/summer camps? I'd really like to hear from people who are in their 1st or 2nd year as an Epik teacher. Thanks! |

You cant bank on making extra. Some schools offer overtime, some dont. Paid camps are long gone.
Not to say you wont have chances to top up your salary, but its not a given & its really not up to you. |

It depends on your experience, degrees, the location of your school, and the number of your schools.
There's an EPIK pay scale that will tell you all about it but I can't be bothered to look it up. Sure you can, though.
Afterschool classes seem to be the luck of the draw. My school hires a Korean teacher for our after school program. |

It's all listed on there web site
http://epik.go.kr/category/detail.epik?cid=3
Edit: Sorry, you are talking about camps and such. Isn't this decided by the individual school rather than epik? |

I made 2.4 extra for doing 4 afterschool programs - 2 during the fall, 1 during winter camp and 1 during the spring. It was nice but now I don't have any due to the school's new scheduling. It seems like this happens a lot.
So you could make extra but don't count on it. |

Last year, I made 600,000 for after school, 700,000 for a 5 day (3 hour) school camp, and got I also got a rural allowance.
This year, a new school, and nothing, zip, nada. They even screwed me out of a rural allowance.
Things have changeeee. |

Yeah I got a buttload more for doing some after school stuff too last year but I decided to drop that. It was tiring me out. Plus dealing with grade 1 and 2 Primary Schoolers was not exactly worthwhile. |

Depends if you've taught before you go to EPIK
If you've taught in Korea for two years and have a TESOL (cert)
You'll start on roughly 2.5 a month, with maybe the additional
Rural placement 100 K a month
Extra schools I.E. 2 schools 100 K a month (50 K per school)
Afterschool classes and any extra teaching are at the discretion of the school and would be on top of that. In my experience any extra classes haven't happened. Even though I requested them when re-signing and changing schools (I was also promised extra classes by the POE Supervisor). It's basically the luck of the draw, verbal promises are at best a 'Maybe' answer in Korea. |

last year I did weeks and weeks of afterschool club with no pay. Initially they were going to pay me, then I took a sickday and the honeymoon period abruptly came to a halt . At that point, they said that the afterschool club would count towards my teaching for the year (for 2 wks/month I only taught 20 instead of 22 classes a week).
So I couldnt say anything because it followed the contract. Its up to your school if they offer it, but being on their good side can go a longer way than not being on their good side. |

2.5? I don't think so. Two years of experience plus a TESOL cert. puts you at 2.3 or 2.4.
2.5-6 is for two consecutive years at the same POE. That's a level 1+ pay.
Look at the scale on the link provided earlier. |

It depends on where you're located...
Different areas and rural vs city have different rates. Last year was my first but i'm still on level 1 . I was on Geoje Island getting 2.5 then the extras. Now I've moved to another part of the province and I'm still on 2.5.
Why would I lie, 2.5 is hardly anything to brag about . In this years contract 1+ is 2.7 in my POE. Maybe the pay scale link provided isn't as detailed as it should be. |

Case study: ME
First year EPIK in Gangwondo- (Level 1- I have 4 years' experience inc. one in Korea)
Gross salary- 2.6 million
This includes an extra 0.1 for working two separate schools, which is great as they are right next door to each other. Some people have bug gerz of commutes though and that 0.1 can get swallowed up pretty quickly.
I have no avenues for extra pay.
Net salary- Little over 2.4 million |
