it's in Seoul, sadly after my nightmare with immigration, i lost the GEPIK contract  I've posted the full contract in the the other thread.
and i've been offered this:

ASAP + someone with no experience = someone just pulled a runner and they need someone clueless to fill the spot.
i wouldn't bother, especially considering you're gonna be working 9 hours a day for 2.1. |

That preference is so transparantly amateurish, it's funny. And I'm not just talking about the spelling. For 'female with no teaching experience', read 'someone I can push around and maybe have an outside chance of getting off with'. Any guy who has to manage someone will (rightly or wrongly) prefer a young woman with no experience as they're the type statistically least likely to cause any problems, and there's always the outside chance she'll be attractive. How well that person does the job is a completely different matter, however, and teaching is a field where experience is vital for improvement. Will the kids care if it's a man or a woman or will they think it's more important that someone can make them want to come to class? Even before the interview, he's (he must be a guy) putting off anyone with a clue about teaching and for that reason, the job is a joke |

First of all I want to applaud "furtak" and "edwardcatflap". I think your advice was spot on and the preference speaks a lot about what the school has in mind and how they will treat the teacher.
I worked at this school and I think "elliot79" you are a very smart person to walk away from this contract. Working there was an absolute nightmare and I think it will take a lot of time to get over the stress of that job.
As for the preference I completely agree that when a school states that they want someone with no experience...what does that say about the quality of the education that they provide for the kids? Being a teacher of preschool age kids is HARD especially when they can not speak your language. Having some experience is something the school should absolutely push for if they have the best interests of the kids in mind.
I also agree that in asking for a female specifically you should be worried. I will tell you that the owners of this school are extremely manipulative and they bully foreign teachers. I really think that they downright don't like foreigners. It seems that foreigners leave a bad taste in their mouth. I think that by hiring a young female with no experience...they can increase their chances that the ball will be in their court. This school tends to want to renegotiate contracts on your first day at the school and once you are in a new country it can be easy to be intimidated when you don't know the rules or the laws.
Another thing that this ad failed to note is that the school is a Christian school and the teachers are required to teach chapel. Bible lessons, bible songs. praying before lunch, starting the week with a new bible verse. While this may be great for some people there are other people who may not be Christians but find themselves required to teach from the Bible. This should definitely be in the job description. |
