I realized that after the exodus of NSETs at the end this past year's SMOE contract, I only have 2 close friends left in Korea................................. One now spends all his time with his gf and the other recently picked up private tutoring everyday of the week to ease the pain of her bf leaving.
How the heck are you supposed to meet people here? I made all my initial friends through orientation last year.
Yeah, this thread's been posted a million times in the past. No need to answer. I'm just in shock from the realization.
I'm not too into drinkin', but that's all it seems most foreigners in Korea are into. I can definitely say that alcohol is central in the social lives of all my other friends and acquaintances here.
Does no one just wanna play SF or Tekken games for hours anymore?

We're vampires man, We outlive people here. There is only one other teacher here from the days that I started. Honestly, the best solution that I found is to find newbies and just help them out. If you notice someone who is new to the neighborhood approach them to see what their story is. If they're new to the country offer to help them out. |

I just found myself in the same situation with two of my best friends leaving for different countries. I still have a lot of so-so friends but they tend to be the clubbing type, which I don't care to do, so it cuts down on time we could be spending together.
I just want my two besties to come back. |

Wow. Wasn't expecting so many in the same boat with me.
@ macho. Yeah man. we're like neighbors.
@ quack. I WOULD like one. but you'd think if i can't even meet people to be friends, I might have some trouble getting a gf. Plus, it seems only Korean women 40+ are into me (I'm 23...)
@ dongjak. Yeah, so-so friends whose idea of fun is drinkin. pretty much the story of my life right now.
@ Patty. Who's your character?
@ tank. Haha, funny thing is, I approached some foreigner in my building cause it looked like he needed help with something a few weeks ago. After saying, "Hello", he says, "Look, if you want English lessons, you gotta pay for them." and shooed me away (I'm Asian so I guess we really do all look the same). ANYONE ON THIS BOARD?! HM...?! RING A BELL?
@kay. thanks  |

LOL I live in a small city so I guess it's different here. I'd still give it a shot though. |

Hobbies are the best way. Hobbies in common bring expats together. Quiz nights are useful too. |

LOL!
Best description of long timers I've seen in a while. Yep, in ESL they come and go like flies. Of the hundreds of people I've met in the last 10 years or so, I can tell you where a handful are. Even people I knew one or two years ago. |

if you go to your local arcade you'll get your ass handed to you in SSF4 or Tekken 6. Enjoy. |

Because I'm not interested in the extreme late night nature bars and clubs here, I didn't meet much of anyone either after plugging away for 8 1/2 months. They don't come until 11pm or so to get get the party started due to most working late at the hagwons. By 11pm, I'm finished doing what I did after work, already home, showered, teeth brushed, and turning in. There is a huge time difference when you get up at 7am and off at 4:30 and most others are up at noon and off at 9 or 10pm. I'd rather drop in at 6 or 7pm for a cold one and talking, but that's not the scene. For me, being a public school teacher has to be the loneliest way to go due to not working with anyone else, seeing anyone else around, and having a schedule a real job back home commands you do undergo. I guess it would not be all that much different back home working bankers hours other than you would run into people after work, can join clubs, clearly understand others, and the food and drink situation just awesomely rocks. I'm no longer concerned about meeting others as I'm just riding out 3 more months to my freedom. |
