So I guess I was hired for Soonchunhyang University. I went to a face to face interview and the woman toldme I was hired. She also said she would send the contract out the following week. I am not sure if thats normel or not, but as the job starts in March, maybe the contracts are not ready.

But my real question is what to expect, as I have taught at private schools in morning and afterschools. I know from these schools, feed children lunch, do phone English, and write report cards. As well as sound like a broken record, "repeat after me."

For the last two years, I have taught at a public high school. So I know conversation classes, and a lot of desk warming as either students are taking exams or teachers ask for teh class to be canceled due to self study.

So what should I exect at the University level? I guess I would be teaching 16 hours a week, but thats about all I know.

Shouldn't you have found that out at the interview?

You may think that. But the interview was like five minutes. I walked in showed her some lesson plans I taught at my high school, and she said well afer our phone interview we had, your hired as you showed up.

Then she said "I'll email you the contract next week" See you in the spring. I have to get back to work. I think I was more stoked I got a University job. I also know from where I worked, most employers won't tell you what you have to do before hiring you.

I mean how many private schools tell people in the west, you will phone teach, write report cards, work Saturdays, and such.

That shows a lack of respect and I would seriously re-consider working there. She thinks you're so desperate for a job she can walk out after 5 minutes because she's got something more important to do? Interviews should be a two way process, you're checking them out too, and there should definitely be a period at the end when the interviewer asks if you have any questions. So to answer your question, whatever the students are like, I reckon you can expect sloppy organisation and poor attitude from the management.

It was Soonchunhyang University. I admit it ended up talking more to the international exchange students while finding the interview building.

But she did phone interview me beforehand. I did research a little bit on the internet. I wouldn't say I was desperate for any job as I know theres many jobs in Korea and elsewhere. The last face to face I had though was back in 2007 when I was in the USA.

I think in Korea, it seems most University jobs are gained by personal contacts, or just showing up. In my case my after I applied y coteacher talked to the woman for like 40 minutes on the phone. Then my public school gave me a day off to go interview. As it was a long way to go and no way to get there by five.

Oh well, if it doesn't work out, pleanty other jobs. Many pay more as well, asssuming the schoolgets no overtime. Not sure on that.

Managing expectations is a big part of success in a university teaching position.

That path to wisdom begins with an accurate understanding of the relationship between students and homework and how much learning actually takes place inside the classroom.

Good luck.

Nope. it won't matter one bit. If you are young, white, and hang out with the students you'll be fine. Teaching ability is not really needed.

Wow, you sure have the pulse of this nation. You should author a book or at least blog on this topic. Anyhow, we are not talking about the same thing.
