After most of my initial friends in Korea left, I met new friends through my hobbies. For me those hobbies were Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and punk rock shows.

The cool thing about those particular hobbies was that they allowed me to make friends with both foreigners and Koreans, not just one or the other.

Punk rock shows...I suppose we may have met, then.

@redaxe. You wouldn't happen to train at 10th planet, would ya?

There is 10th Planet in Korea now?! Whoa... are they gonna have Eddie Bravo over for a seminar or anything?

I trained here: http://bjj.co.kr/

Awesome BJJ school with a legit black belt instructor. Gi only though.

Possibly. If you went to either Stompers or Club SPOT a lot, then almost definitely.

If there aren't any other foreigners to mix and mingle with,
how about Koreans?

If you like kids, go to the library and study the easiest kiddy books.
Some kids like for adults to read those kiddy books to.

Or enroll as a student in one of the hagweons--music, self-defense, a third language, anything you're interested in.

Or volunteer someplace.
If there is an orphanage close by, then there are children craving for adult attention close by.

OP - while I cant offer any practical advice on what do except that you should pursue your hobbies more until you meet people, I admire that you put yourself out like this and made this post. A lot of people would have let their pride get in the way and not have done that. (i really doint mean to sound patronising -im being quite sincere).

I like clubbing but couldn't do it non stop every weekend. Then it gets old, plus I worked in the club scene in my 20's, so it's not as if though I've missed something and not as if though anything has really "changed".

It's still fun... just in more moderation. I'll be going to clubs when I'll literally be the "old man in the bar".. well club Smile

Boozing, especially bar boozing ceased to interest me shortly after my 21st birthday when it stopped being "exciting" and "interesting" (as scofflaw Smile )
I'll drink for social lubrication, nothing more.

I also have no real friends here, but I don't really mind all that much. yes, there are times I do mind, but in the balance of things, when I look over my everyday life, frankly, I don't really have the time for a lot of socialization, at least not if I want to stick to my "made in Korea" gym regimen. Between a full day at school and the gym during the week, there's no time for going out. It's a pain. You're tired, you're a bit underslept (I'm a nightowl but work days) and often by the time the weekend rolls around, Friday night I am dead ass tired. I'll sleep 12 hours easily on a Friday night. It's only by Saturday night that I feel kind of refreshed and ready to roll, and then even with that, sometimes I'm more than content just to chill out and stay in.

I'm curious if my attitude would be different if I were in Seoul or closeby, instead of being a good 1.5 hrs away, but given how draining my workweek is, unless I literally lived in Itaewon or Hongdae and had some peeps to hang with a bit, things would remain the same.

Believe me, even if you may hate Korea now, you will miss it when you're gone.

Not sure if you're referring to me, but I don't hate Korea at all. In fact, I am considering passing up a wealth management position I landed back home (85,000 USD minus bonuses ain't so bad for a 23 year old, right?) to stay in Korea. I love living here.

@ illvibes. thanks Smile

@ tomato. haha, despite some of the awkwardness of your post, i appreciate the thought. as far as the nationality of people i'd like to meet, i'm an equal opp kinda guy.

@ vaga. haha, "old man in the bar." well, at least you're aware of it. some guys never do it seems. actually, my life at the moment mirrors yours a bit in that i don't have much time for stuff and am dead tired at the end of the week. work, gym, tv, sleep.

if you do hit the gym regularly and work a full day's schedule (8 hours or a little more), it really does not leave much time for getting out and about, especially if you have to "commute" in order to do it. If it's walking distance or very very short distance away, perhaps a different story.

re being the old man at the bar. Well I fully anticipate it.. at least at the club, since I'm a club rather than a bar guy. That's not going to stop me however, since I'll make my decisions for me rather than what society's "perceptions" or "guidelines" are for what a man of my age "should" do.
(or not do)

as a matter of fact, I tend to take a lot of pleasure out of defying societal conventions. It's likely that if society dictated that men, especially at my age, should NOT marry, that I might be married., for e.g.

Demonizing adult males who take joy in positive interaction with children is what's creepy. This idea that any man who enjoys interacting with children is "creepy" is quite literally damaging western society. Congratulations on doing you're small part to be a foot soldier of dysfunction.
