Goldfish to test water safety

A school of six goldfish will undertake the mission of testing the safety of water supplied to COEX, where leaders of the world�s 20 largest economies will gather on Nov. 11 and 12.
The goldfish are tasked to ensure that the water used in the bathrooms at the main venue of the G20 summit is clean and toxic-free, the nation�s largest convention center and underground shopping mall said Tuesday.
During the two-day meeting of global leaders, goldfish will be kept in an underground aquarium next to the waste water treatment facility where used water is purified to flush toilets throughout COEX.
Before providing water to the multiple restrooms, management personnel will check the quality of the water by using it to fill the fish tank with the goldfish. The measure is an addition to the routine quality inspections, COEX officials said.
``We will inspect the water quality by using goldfish during the G20 summit to prevent possible terrorist attacks using toxic chemical substances. We also hope it will help improve Korea�s image among the top world leaders that the host nation is more environment-friendly than expected,�� an official at the COEX management office said.
The multi-purpose facility has been treating waste water over the past few years for reuse in bathrooms. COEX uses around 1 million tons of water every year. Of that, about 150,000 tons are purified and recycled for reuse, saving the facility nearly 360 million won.
금붕어가 코엑스 물 안전점검
금붕어가 오는 11~12일 서울 코엑스에서 열리는 주요20개국(G20) 정상회의에 공급되는 물의 안전을 점검하는 �경호원� 역할을 맡는다.
코엑스는 G20 정상회의 기간동안 금붕어를 활용해 회의장 화장실로 향하는 세정수의 상태를 최종 점검할 계획이라고 9일 밝혔다.
중책을 맡은 금붕어 여섯 마리는 지하 3층 중수처리시설에 마련된 어항에 살고 있다. 금붕어는 각국 정상이 사용할 세정수에 독극물 등 테러 위험 물질이 들어가지 않았음을 증명한다.
코엑스는 행사 기간 정상과 대표단이 사용하는 화장실에 공급되는 재생수로 하루 한두 차례 어항의 물을 갈아 이 물이 금붕어도 살아 숨쉴 만큼 깨끗하다는 점을 보여준다는 계획이다. 물론 물을 공급하기 전 하던 수질 검사도 종전대로 한다.
코엑스 관계자는 �금붕어를 수질 점검에 활용함으로써 한국의 친환경적 사고를 세계에 알리고 나라의 품격을 높이는 계기가 됐으면 한다�고 말했다. 코엑스는 몇년 전부터 한번 사용한 물을 중수처리시설에서 정제해 화장실 용수로 재사용하고 있다. 이렇게 코엑스, 코엑스몰, 아셈타워에 공급되는 물이 한 해 15만여t, 아끼는 물값이 3억6000만원이다.

| they will die if the water is too cold. they could just test the water regularly instead of thinking having gold fish in the water supply will impress the world. |

Yeah. Sounds gimmicky when a simple water quality test could be done the scientific way......also, the expected PR they're trying to achieve will probably backfire as I'd guess most people wouldn't want these fish to lose their lives in such a pointless way.
Sounds like classic, ajeossi-with-no-concept-of-how-other-people-think, thinking to me. |
