The title to this thread has made me laugh every single time I see it.

It's so absurd, I just sh*t. (Not dissing the topic)

Just FYI I'm male. Like Dorothy said, the sheep will be killed by a butcher and some of the meat will go to the poor so it's really just like it was for a lot of our grandparents or great-grandparents. None of it will be wasted.

The only thing I was kind of concerned about is that I would feel a bit guilty making it into a spectacle. My BF insisted I abstain from alcohol tonight (the night before) and I'm trying to get in the right spiritual mood. He is a Muslim but generally not practicing but he is a strong believer and very traditional in many ways.

I'm supposed to abstain from alcohol for the rest of the week because I'll be eating some of the sacrificed food and even after that day someone might bring me more and I need to be pure when I eat it. We'll see how long that lasts.

My BF is, not me. It's pretty common actually but neither one of us is open about it here.

In a few countries, homosexuality is punishable by death. Care to tell us what those countries all have in common?

Whatever, they use the same quote. So Jews, Christians AND Muslims. As semetic religions, the three have more in common than they have apart. Either way, the point is that whatever religion you're part of, you don't follow everything written in the holy books to the letter, even if you are orthodox/extremist. You can believe in a religion without following EVERYthing it says, or agreeing with it all.

And I assume, Conrad, that you realize that just because some countries have death for homosexuality in lawbooks that it's more a reflection on the countries and their leaders than the actual religion itself. There are lots of muslims in countries where that is not the law. And that even in those countries homosexuals are not stoning themselves to death.

Anyway, this is getting away from the point of the original post.

I say that as long as the meat is not going to waste, it seems fine to me as long as you're not torturing it first (which you wouldn't be, I believe). Really, how do you think most animals get killed on small farms? Isn't it similar?

That alcohol thing seems particularly tough given how tasty lamb is with a good ale. Sad

Update - we sacrificed the sheep this morning. The butcher killed the sheep and skinned it for us. Fortunately the sheep died very quickly. We took the carcass home, I got to carry the bag with the innards back (I know, gross).
My BF's mom hacked up the carcass with an ax and divided up the meat.

Like Lisa said, all 3 Abrahamic religions are against homosexuality. I've read somewhere that it's less strongly condemned in Islam than in Christianity but because most Muslim countries are still under religious law homosexuality is punished there. Anyway that's not the case where I'm at, but it's not accepted socially.

Some people might say that you're choosing which part of the religion to follow and which to ignore but like Lisa said, everyone does that to some extent. How many Christians are divorced, how many Christian women are submissive to their husbands? Most people aren't ready to give up their religion and the values they were raised with because they're gay. That's especially true if you live in a part of the world where homosexuality is not accepted and I think it's easier to ignore the contradiction if you know you'll never be open about being gay.

Anyway I don't mean to preach about it, I know it does seem a bit odd but try to look at it from a different perspective. Most gay Muslims I know haven't totally abandoned their religion and can be q strict in some ways.

I have no religion at all. But at least you do realize that people aren't able to follow their bible too closely anymore because to do so would be insane and not compatible with life in the 21st century.
