Avoid staying too long in the Kuta/Legian/Seminyak area unless you really want to party with really young Australians who are getting ridiculously trashed, many of whom are away from home for the first time.
Places I would recommend: Blue Point and Padang Padang are relatively unknown to non-locals, but are really cool. Blue Point is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, a rocky point thrusting out into the sea. Padang Padang is a relatively small beach that you have to go through a cave to get to. Both of these are in the Bukit, the peninsula south of Denpasar.
If you have a couple days and a bit of money to spend, I'd really recommend going to the Gili Islands off of Lombok. It's a bit over two hours on the fast boat, which costs a bit over $100 round trip. They're probably the most pristine islands I've ever been to, and are very cheap and relaxed once you're there.
Aside from that, definitely hit up Ubud, at least for a day-trip. The pork place there, Ibu Oka, was labeled some of the best pork in the world by Anthony Bourdain, and I can't really disagree. If you go there, make sure you go relatively early, as they run out of pork after two or three o'clock, if I remember correctly. The monkey forest there is also really cool, just make sure your stuff is in a place the monkeys can't steal it. |

If you're into diving at all head on over to Amed/Tulamben. The wreck dive there is awesome. |

thanks so much for the advice. We are budget traveling and have about a week.. so might just stick to Bali. THe Gili islands & Lombok look worth checking out though. Where is Blue point? When I google it a resort keeps showing up? |

It's about an hour's drive from the Kuta area, near Uluwatu Temple where they have the fire-dancing. I don't know if it will show up on a map, my local friends brought me there. My understanding is that it's a bit of a local secret that maybe I shouldn't be sharing, but I don't see hordes of EFL teachers from Korea overrunning the place. If you get a driver for a day (around $40) they should be able to get you there.

Ubud was my favorite town on Bali. Great place, cheap too. The monkey forest is quite cool. So is the surrounding countryside.
Uluwatu is a great temple to see, it's closer down by Kuta/Seminyak. My favorite temple, though, was Pura Ulun Danu. It's damn awesome. Google it.

Get to the top of Ganung Agung if you can. Very cool. |

Make it seven days and save 20 bucks. A week-long stay requires a visa costing 10 dollars, and the next visa is 25 or 30 dollars good for 25 days. |

incorrect, they've abolished the 10 buck visa.
it's a flat 25 bucks or a month or anything under now.
there's something to be said for partying in Kuta/Legian. I'm a big fan.
lots of hot Russian dyevs in Bali these days (it's the "new" thing) |

Thanks for the tip, but well, Korean Air and other airlines that fly to Bali offer cheaper fares for stays of seven days. |

Hi,
I went to Bali earlier this year. Awesome place. I definitely agree on Tulamben. In my opinion, that is a must. The shipwreck of the Liberty ship was one of the highlights of the trip. If you are a diver, it is a must. I stayed at a pretty decent priced place in Seminyak. I can't really recommend Monkey Forest though it was disappointing. Too many touts there wanting to buy their overpriced souvenirs. Get used to the touts because they are everywhere. I got ripped off on a few things when I first arrived, but, oh well, I learned my lesson after that. Bali is very safe. You've got the beach, sun and Indian Ocean...what's not to like. |

The problem with Bali is getting there from Korea. Unless you fly Air Asia, tickets won't be less than 550,000 won and usually more in winter. |
