i worked with them as well...all the events listed in the previous response are very true!! They dont give you feedback about how much hours u put in for those choreographies that you do, but they criticize stupid shit that has nothing to do with kids' performance...
My manager was a SNAKE! she was lying to everyone about whatever their case , was, and if I had a similar issue, she would say that it's not possible...but i'd hear from other teachers that they were getting their stuff done, ( like having extra days off during holidays!!) and it wouldnt be a problem....i was trying all my best to be friendly, respectful to her,but she really hated me for some reason... I guess for speaking the truth, ( about house deposit, and TAX MONEY was not correct, and PENSION amount was LESS ! not 9 % !!!) so they hated me cuz i figured out what YBM was all about.....
Anyhow, I had a great partner though, she's still my best friend, and my reference.. In short, THEY FAVOR ALOT among teachers, and they LOVE people WHO ARE FAKE AND all jibbery and smiles ......
I suggest you to meet with the manager and supervisor, and try to talk to other teachers....Again, they MIGHT BE HAPPY THERE, but u can never know how they will TREAT you ....... |

| Anyone know about the one in Haebongchon? My friend who works there says they deduct 100k for your rent but you can make up to 300k working the 6pm shift. |

You have a bunch of vague references.
1. The one what?
2. 100k for rent would not even get you a goshiwon. It's something else, like management fee. 100,000 is too high I think unless it includes electricity and water.
3. 300k sounds like a security deposit. GEPIK does 900,000. What is the 300,000 for? The idea to "make up" for something they took from you spells FREE LABOR.
Please clarify the bold stuff. |

1. The PSA children's school.
2. 100k that the teacher pays because the rent exceeds the schools budget allotment for teachers' apartments.
3. You can make "up to" (meaning 300k is the limit) extra pay working a 6pm shift instead of finishing at the usual 4:30 shift.
I didn't realize that was so vague. My melatonin was kicking in at the point. |

That doesn't make any sense. Security deposits are 5,000,000 to 10,000,000. Schools have to sign 1 year leases. That's why new teachers usually don't get an apartment compared to teachers in Japan and China.
If they are pushing this BS on teachers, then it's simply a way for them to avoid paying pension/medical.

That's called "overtime"
Is this 300,000 per month? We still don't have the specifics of the situation. 20,000/5 days a week, for 4 weeks would be 400,000 per 1 hour class. If you are saying the difference is 4:30-6:00, that is 1.5 hours. So, you should be getting 600,000.
Again, this spells free labor from what I am seeing. |

Yeah, I'm not to sure on the particulars of it either. Just going on what another teacher told me. I'll know more after I do an interview next week. The 100k deduction to cover the "extra cost" of rent seems odd to me. Anyway, thanks for responding. And yeah, I think I smell free labor enterprise as well. |

| Yeah, everyone loses a bit of their pay to an "apartment fee" which covers the cleaning and upkeep of the building's hallways, garbage removal and such. How much it costs totally depends on where you're put, but most people lose 50,000-70,000 a month. I think it's a tad excessive because previously the apartment fee at another job was only 30,000 a month, but that was outside of Seoul. |

No, my understanding of it (2nd hand info) was that if you didn't want to pay the 100k, then they would give you a split-level basement apt. |

| Does anyone have info they would like to share publicly on the thread? I am also interested in learning about teachers' experiences with this company. Thanks. |

I worked at Appletree in Apgujeong back in 2007. Never had any major problems with them. They treated foreign teachers well and always helped out with the day to day stuff. I know at other YBM schools you have to do the sleep-overs and stuff but at Appletree the kids are all too young so there's none of that.
But if you have issue with trying to teach english to 18month olds who can barely speak korean then its probably not the job for you!
On the down side the pay sucked. But it has probably gone up since then. I would agree with what someone said earlier in the thread though; its not worth it to take the 9am-6pm contract. I worked till 4.30pm and that was enough for me! |

Bump. Would like ANY information about GATE. I'm guessing it's similar to PSA, except it's for "gifted" students. |
