PostPosted: Tue Nov 23, 2010 2:41 am    Post subject: U.S. Embassy in Seoul Announcement Reply with quote

The U.S. Embassy in Seoul is transmitting the following information through the Embassy's Warden System as a public service to all U.S. citizens in the Republic of Korea. Please disseminate this message broadly to U.S. citizens.

This warden message is being issued in response to reports of North Korean artillery firing into the Northwest Islands (Yeonpyeong-do) off the coast of the Republic of Korea the afternoon of November 23, 2010. This artillery exchange was isolated to the Northwest Island area of the Republic of Korea and ceased as of 3:30 p.m. The Embassy is closely monitoring the situation. Should the security situation change, the Embassy will update this warden message.

U.S. citizens living or traveling in South Korea are encouraged to register with the Embassy through the State Departments travel registration website: https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/ . U.S. citizens without internet access may register in person at the U.S. Embassy. Registration is a voluntary way of telling us that you, as a U.S. citizen, are in Korea, whether for a long-term stay or for a short visit. In the event of an emergency, we use registration information to communicate with you. This could include a family emergency in which relatives in the United States request that the Embassy contact you.

For the latest security information worldwide, U.S. citizens should regularly monitor the State Departments website at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the Unites States, or, for callers from outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

End text.

Beat me to posting this, thanks for forwarding it on.

I'll take the opportunity to bump the thread and say if you're a U.S. citizen who didn't receive this email today you should get registered with the embassy. It takes about five minutes on line and is just a smart thing to do.

That's reassuring, my wife doesn't have her K-passport anymore.

no thanks.

I ignore all announcements by US State Dept and embassies.

I'm also not "registering". The govt already knows way too much about me as it is.

It's good to stay in touch with the information from the US Embassy.

the fact that not everyone is interested in what the Embassy has to say, much less "registering" with them, or anyone else.

I don't have the time to quote you all the idiot statements issued by US Embassies abroad during my travels. They're meant for a certain type of tourist or expat (these people really shouldn't be overseas period). I am most definitely not one of those.

I also don't want to be contacted much less evacuated. What a pain.

I want to be left alone, though it'd be nice if the Koreans provided me with a nice large caliber machine gun so that I can mow down many rows of Norks before it's my turn to die. It'd be a good and noble cause and it beats dying of decrepit old age pissing all over yourself on some hospital bed.

Agreed. I like the warning about working in Korea. And the warning about flying Lao Airlines. And the warning about flying at all in Indonesia.

it's meant for idiots who think it's the same as being back home and nothing will ever happen to them because like home they can sue the socks off anyone even remotely associated with any "accident" (even if it's a real "accident")

I always know my risks overseas are elevated and in some cases highly elevated. I do my research and often know far more about those risks than the idiots at the Embassy who are usually isolated from the natives around them.

like I said, those people shouldn't be overseas period.

these are also the same people who won't buy drugs overseas, even in Canada, because of pharma propaganda about them not being "safe".
