I'm getting an iPhone 4 soon and I keep hearing about jailbreaking it. Can anyone tell me -

1) What are the advantages of this?

2) What are the disadvantages of this?

3) How do you do this (and can you) with a new iPhone 4?

4) Anything else interesting about it?

Use the search function or browse the iPhone sticky. This has been answered dozens of times.

I've browsed the iPhone sticky. There may be an answer in there, somewhere.

Search results come up with threads such as 'I don't like iTunes and now I can't get my app onto my iPod', ''Which one is a better investment....?' and 'PS3 now hackable, modchip available...'. There even seems to be one about how to jailbreak the iPhone 3, but nothing about the benefits to it.

You'd be better off visiting specialist forums like XDA developers, or mobilism.org for that kind of info. Those people are experts in this area, and could provide you with specifics.

Hey, I don't mean to sound condescending. But I'm sure I will.
Why you are searching a teacher's forum for information on Jailbreaking, is what should concern you first. You do know there are specific forums for that, don't you? You do know web search engines can help you find these forums, right?

You couldn't even be bothered to do more than 'browse' the iphone sticky here. This leads me to recommend that you just forget about jailbreaking your phone. The answers are so easy to find, and knowing you can't find them, how do you expect to be able to actually complete and maintain the process?

I upload a lot of high end audio apps and plugins to torrent sites and I get an endless stream of messages asking, 'Will this work on windows?" or, "Where can I get a program to mount this?", or "How do I get it to open?", even though I leave concise instructions.

My reply will be the same to you. Actually operating the applications in question are much more difficult than attaining them. If you can't do the latter, how can you do the former?

Now that i have that off my chest:
1) The advantages are that a whole new abundance of tweaks, customizations, games, and applications will be available to you to install on your phone that are not available on iTunes. If you torrent, you can get great games and apps for free,

2) You MAY void the warrantee on your phone if you don't know how to restore it when somethings breaks, and you have to use special firmware updates.

3) Yes, but again, applying and utilizing the capabilities of the jailbreak is more difficult than finding out where it is.

4) This is just question 1 in different words.

If you want to know my logic behind it -

1) When considering advantages, the people in this forum may state things specific to Korea. For instance I heard there's an app for subway maps in English, they might recommend particular Korean apps that are useful (for instance, I once read there's a Korean app for checking your balance), any English <--> Korean dictionaries or any issues with the Korean model iPhone 4, such as the tracking app not working. There is also a sticky where people have mentioned it, but I've not seen much specific information - but it does show that plenty of people own one and some have jailbroken it.

2) My problem is that I've found too many instructions, some of which don't mention which version they work or don't work on, what firmware the iPhones are shipping with now, etc. Some of those instructions also aren't very clear. Just something like 'Use <x>', which rarely leads me to detailed instructions by searching. This is probably better suited to an actal tech forum, rather than the tech section of one, but was asked as a 'might as well, since I'm asking about apps/Korean specific iPhone 4 stuff'.

Thank you for the information. I didn't know about having to use special firmware updates or new games being available.

You need to be specific.. If you search "Jailbreak iPhone 4.2" you get applicable, reliable results, most of which are easy to follow videos. Reading the comments below the instructions or video let you know if it is reliable or not. Simple.
If the instructions tell you to use <x>, and you don't know what that is, then you're best finding out what that is. You're asking here anyway.

That in itself helps, thanks. Plenty of the undated websites, mention different current versions. Since I haven't got it yet, I couldn't check which it was. The first page searching for 'current iphone firmware' gave me plenty of 1.x and 2.x I'm guessing it'll ship with the most current or they'll update it in the shop or something, rather than let me avoid doing it myself.

Hit up http://blog.iphone-dev.org. This is the official source for the current (and most past) jailbreaks.

The writing is a little dense (because they are huge nerds) but just take your time to read it over and all the info you need is there.
