well, only the stupid ones did.
the smart(er) ones either ignored or pretended not to see or notice the official summons.
Seems like some clown up at the POE got the bright idea that all teachers should come to school at 11pm and STAY AT SCHOOL because of an "emergency", supposedly related to an iminent bomb attack from the North.
such immense silliness.
even if it were an "emergency" and an attack were imminent, do you think I'd come to school??
would you? |

I don't know why the school would be such a good place, except for the fact that a lot of the teachers have cars so maybe I could get one to drive me to the airport if things got that bad and there were no taxis on the road.
Otherwise, the school is the last place I'd go. To paraphrase Mr. Burns, it would make the last moments on the Earth socially awkward... |

in the event of an emergency, I'd feel safer on a bicycle.
[maybe] You've seen the gridlock when they have Kim Yuna at Kintex. Can't imagine it would be better/safer/quicker to get anywhere if there was a real event |

Civil servants are required to do their part in the event of war/attack/whatever.
The school administrator passed around an emergency phone contact sheet with everyone's phone numbers and then we all had a quick reminder about what to do in the event of war, yadayadayada... So while it may SEEM stupid, if the teachers want to keep their jobs, they are civil servants and the law says they have to help out... |

When does the winter break start for public schools? Maybe it will be like that time last year when GEPIK schools told the teachers no overseas travels because of H1N1.
My coteacher told me I can't go out of the country for summer vacation and the following school day after my vacation to Hong Kong:
K teacher: "Did you go overseas during your vacation?"
Me : "Of course not"
K teacher: "Okay" |

yes, my coordinator told me that today this morning also when I laughed at the idea of coming in to school at 11 pm for some "imagined" emergency.
I told her if it's a real emergency and they're passing out firearms, or there's something else real "to do" (dig a ditch, etc) I'll be the first one there, but if it's to round up the cattle in some stupid room or rooms to sit there, then don't bother me, thanks.
I haven't been told about the vacation nonsense, and I doubt I will, but that will be treated with a S.N.I.P
(and I was not hassled about traveling abroad during the height of the swine flu thing either). |

depends on your school and depends on whether it's elementary, middle or HS.
our last day is Dec, 28, later than last year, probably because of the weeklong Chuseok this year. |

No, GEPIK did no such thing. The GPOE put the Korean teachers on 'alert' because the President raised the 'alert level' for the entire country. Because our Korean workmates are all Public Servants, they must abide by the conditions of their employment...which means...in this case...that they are on 'alert'.
We aren't Public Servants...we're contracted staff. We aren't on 'alert' any more than the lunch ladies are! |
