For some reason I'm a VIP with KEB so they don't make me pay any fees sending from Korea but my home bank charges about 16,000 won, not bad.

I'm more concerned with the mark up from the official rate. I use this http://asia.advfn.com/quote_Australian-Doll_FX_AUDKRW.html to check the exchange rate, but KEB is usually at least 10 won higher. I know they have to make some money out of the deal, but I have a considerable sum to send home so as you can understand, I want the very best rate of exchange.

Any banks with better exchange rates or are they all about the same?

I wonder how you pulled that off...

Do you send big chunks of money often?
Do you have a lot of money in your account there?

I might try the traveler's check next time if time is not of the essence. Then again the convenience of the automatic remittance account is unbeatable...

Well I haven't sent a chunk back for 3 years. I have what I would consider a lot; perhaps KEB gives some good deals for those with a chunk sitting there.

I have an arrangement with some Korean friends in Canada whereby I transfer money from my Korean account into their Korean Account, and they do the same for me in Canada. When you take the fees and crappy exchange rate into consideration, banks take a large percentage of your savings... But, I pay the exact exchange rate and 1 $ in fees. I think I saved around 400$ last year through this arrangement.

There are other benefits to transferring money this way... Smile

I would be very surprised if you didn't have a middle man fee. Check your receipts as no bank in Korea has an agreement with a bank overseas to transfer money without a middle man.

Answer to your problem: stop being so cheap.

How is wanting to save money on bank fees being cheap? Are we supposed to just give away our money to the banks for fun? You're just a douchebag recklesscognition1!
