I pretty much swore off his comedy after watching thirty seconds of some made-for-TV cop show parody he was in, back in the 80s. The gag involved his character walking into a restaurant, and the coat-girl asks him if he wants her to check his coat. He says okay, and she proceeds to put a check mark on it.

But I watched The Poseiden Adventure a few months back, and thought he did a pretty credible job as the captain who gets bullied by the tycoon into navigating unsafely. I gather his role in the Airplane movies was supposed to be a send-up of that.

I enjoyed him in movies such as Airplane and The Naked Gun. RIP Mr. Nielson.

I enjoyed the story the producers of Airplane told about him. He was called in for an audition/'interview. they knew he had never done comedy but they agreed to listen to him. Leslie brought a whoopie cushion sat down on it and occasionally wiggled around to make it work, all the time keeping a straight face. They knew they had their man.

The funniest guy to come out of the Yukon! I loved his movies. He will be missed. RIP.

Jerry Zucker, part of the team that produced the Airplane movies, reminisces about Leslie Nielsen.

But I'm confused. He says Nielsen played someone called Dr. Rumack. I've never seen the films, but I thought Nielsen played the captain, and delivered the famous line "Have you ever seen a grown man naked?"

No, he did play the doctor. I think the captain was the white-haired guy that starred in Mission:Impossible.

Ah, the article reminded me of his name: Peter Graves.
