I will admit, I am a heavy drinker. Not alcohol. Soda, mostly coke.

Before anyone here launches a tirade on how unhealthy soda is, I want to say this. I know. And also, I barely drink, don't smoke, and have never done drugs before. I don't drink coffee either. I exercise and eat a somewhat healthy diet. I am quite healthy for someone my age. I consider soda as my one vice.

Since I have come here, and it seems a lot more lately, I get flack from people about drinking soda. I have been called sugar addict, caffiene addict, cola addict, etc. I guess in Korea it is okay to be a chain smoking raging alcoholic who drinks 20 cups of syrup-like coffee a day, but heaven horbid someone drink soda.

Does anyone else get this same BS treatment?

I hear you man, I'm a heavy drinker, beer only, but besides that I only drink Coke. I go through two liters a day (ok I drink cream soda too but you can't really get that in Korea).

I don't eat fruit, hardly eat veggies except for spuds, and eat a lot of meat (I'm South African, it's what we do).

That said, I'm in my thirties, no problem with my teeth, I never exercise (unless the five minute walk to the beer store counts as such) and don't do drugs but did a lot in my teens and early twenties.

I'm slim (underweight actually), have no health issues, and have all my hair even. Don't believe the hype (ugh, can't believe I just said that).

Some people's metabolism's can handle the kind of diet Metalhead eats. Most people can't.

As a reformed fatty and now BGIK (buff guy in Korea) I can say that while drinking soda may be better for you than drinking alcohol, it's still not good for you at all, diet or regular. But that's not the point. Koreans know it's unhealthy, so they'll drop some brutally honest criticism on you, but only because Soda isn't a social lubricant like drinking and smoking are. In a Confucian society like Korea, it matters.

I heard it leads to harder stuff. Next you'll be tempted to throw a bit of whisky in there, then you'll be smoking cigars and before you know it you'll be a heroin addict.

Just to add to this, it isn't all roses and bidets that squirt petals - despite my efforts (years ago), I can't bulk up or get muscular, so there are downsides to it.

That said, Koreans eat their fair share of unhealthy things too (who doesn't!) so I wouldn't worry about their 'criticisms' - just play along with it and say 'Yeah I only drink Coke because it's the only thing that keeps my teeth so white' or some such nonsense, I most certainly wouldn't let what others think of me drinking what I like bring me down, just roll with the punches as such.

The original recipe of Coca Cola syrup was made to cancel out the negative effects that the cocaine caused to the stomach, so, nowadays, if you have a stomachache, the stuff is actually pretty soothing. I always keep a can in the fridge in case I get a stomachache, but usually my can stays there for a long time before I need it.

My grandma told me that her mom used to have a bottle of the concentrated syrup that she'd mix up with water whenever the kids had tummyaches.

I used to drink a lot of cola, although lately I've cut back.

When I was in college, I would drink a can of Pepsi or Diet Pepsi every morning in the food court. Everyone has the same reaction, "ugh how can you drink pop so early in the morning?!" I would respond by pointing out that drinking pop is really no different than drinking coffee. And people go through cranky withdrawals if they don't get their morning coffee.

Yeah in China they mix flat Coke with ginger to cure some ails, not too sure what ails really, never really listened to that tosh because as far as pain goes, only opiates are real.

Thanks, America, for making opiates taboo the world over, along with all the other retarded things you've done to better the world (sorry, Korean forums, have to take stabs at the States whenever I can, apparently that is what is done in Korea, just trying to fit in of course).

Not the world over. Codeine is over the counter in Canada and the UK.

Yeah can buy codeine over the counter in SA, too, not exactly the most effective opiate now though is it?

I don't think soda is that bad for you as long as you don't gain weight and get enough of the other nutritions. In other words, if you swap some of the carbohydrates from rice/white bread into coke and otherwise eat the same, I believe it wont be that bad for you. You will just replace some fast carbohydrates with other fast carbohydrates. The problem is that many people will add it on top of the other carbohydrates.

Nobody is saying coke is healthy, but I guess that obvious.

Hey, no tirades from me, especially since you could throw it back at me about how much coffee and beer I drink. I'm a live and let live kind of guy.

But I have to confess that I do sometimes wonder what adults get out of drinking cola. It's basically just sugar water-caramelized, carbonated, caffeinated, sugar water. What's in it for you? I guess I could understand if you said you drink it for the caffeine, but other than that I don't know. It really is not even a thirst quencher, at least for me.

Again, no big deal. Just wonder.

lol yeah the US is the reason people think opiates are bad...nevermind that half of the chinese population was addicted to opium which had a rather significant hand in expediting the fall of their 2000+ year society.

as far as cola goes, if you work out or just don't like eat like a fat ass in general nothing's wrong with soda.

It is terrible for the teeth, though, so make sure to brush or at least chew some sugarless gum and drink some water after you finish. It's not a long-time-sipping drink either. Drink it and rinse those teeth.

I've mentioned this before, but meth mouth and mountain dew mouth are very similar (and often found in the same people).

Did you ever do the baby tooth in a cup of cola experiment? Creepy!

I, too, believe everything I read. Sure, unlike you I lack a PhD in these fields so I just have to go by subjective experiences, nonetheless, did you know that dinosaurs never existed? I read that in a study, so it must be true.

Off to go admire my hair in the mirror of my unbrushed teeth, laters!
