I was hoping the USA could host it to get into the international football culture. Would also be excellent in promoting some life and excitement into our stagnated economy. Qatar doesn't need the money, it's so rich with oil. Qatar is exotic and FIFA wants to get the Islam world involved since soccer is the international sport.

I don't begrudge a populous country with a tradition of football, but I do take offence at them basically giving it to a bunch of oil-rich playboys who fancy having it in their back garden to stroke their egos.

I don't even know where Qatar are in the FIFA world rankings...top 100?

I think I read they were at #89. They decided that since their team couldn't make the World Cup, they would try to host it instead.

I do think it's admirable that they will dismantle some of the stadiums and donate them to Third World countries.

So anyways, Qatar will change a bunch of their laws for the duration of the world cup, so i imagine the business with alcohol, women, the press, human rights and so on will be relaxed. but i think if a country HAS to do that for a world cup then it's basically a sign they shouldn't really be considered in the first place.

I called it. I knew it would go to Russia on the grounds that FIFA had openly
stated how they hate joint bids. Bye bye spain/portugal, Netherlands/Belgium. So you had England and Russia. Russia's never hosted it before. And FIFA is making it their grand mission to bring football to all corners of the Earth.

The second decision is shit though. Japan and Korea never had a chance.
And you had USA, Australia, and Qatar. Could have gone any way with
those. It should have been Australia. They never hosted it. But FIFA again is all about bringing football to all corners...

But like has been said. A world cup party in one of the strictest places in the world. If FIFA was so desperate to bring the WC to the middle east then they should have waited till a decent middle eastern country made a bid....ie. Turkey, Morocco, Lebanon, the UAE, hell even Israel would have been a better pick. Qatar is really boring. It's basically like Vegas without
the booze. They're not even into football that much. Lousy decision.

I support the decision. Even if a country f's it up royally, they need to be given a chance. I prefer that to repeat hosts. I personally don't mind joint bids, ut FIFA has their reasons.

SA ruined their chances of ever hosting again after their buvuzlla crap.
