So, USA didnt get the world cup in 2022.

CNN (on reporting comments made by nations who were not successful) this morning stated that somebody, somewhere in the USA cares.
Also coming from a nation that flatly refused to call it football in their bid to FIFA (which is an abbreviation for "Fdration Internationale de Football Association." The English translation is "International Federation of Football Association.").
What a surprise that FiFA didnt award it to the US.

Am I the only person who is irritated on a daily basis by people calling football soccer? Why do I have to explain that Bak Ji-Sung's job is a professional footballer not professional soccer-er and that Daegu FC doesnt stand for 'Daegu soccer club'?.
There are variations of football, ausie rules, american rules etc. Is it too difficult to say that? - Thats what old men call it (Jumpers for goal posts etc).
Maybe I should just give in to this imperialism through language...

Rant over.

Anyway, good on you Russia.

The United States was trying for the 2022 World Cup bid, not 2018.

Actually, the English translation is "International Federation of Soccer Association", if you're translating into American English.

I have to say, this is kind of a fanboy ranting topic. Uh oh, the entire world calls them elevators instead of lifts, I'd better go harass England about their local vocabulary. And while we're on the "imperialistic language" topic, there's a reason it's "football" in Spanish, rather than "Bola con los Pies".

Soccer: ,, players fall down for no reason lie there moaning . BAd Bad officiating. The occasional riot. boring

foofball: Game played in America. Honest officiating, players play with injurys. occasional booing. exciting.

The last world cup was an embarassment. the French team quit , questions about gambling syndicates controlling the game. those stupid vuelzas.

why the U.s. would bid on such a shoddy thing surprises me.

That's the round-ball players' opinion of Americans who get NFL contracts soley for kick-offs and long-snaps.
Anyway...
Russia needs a world cup to rebuild their dipilated stadiums and their devastated league structure after the fall of Soviet Union. Russia has a population of 160 mil (not including the former Soviet Republics) FIFA cannot ignore that kind of market. Plus, a World Cup in Russia will re-ignite interest in the game in Central Asia, which is a rather neglected at the moment.
Hopefully Russians will be smart and will stage some games in Ukrine, Belarus, and Baltic Republics.

Qatar?? Qatar??!!

FIFA have gone absolutely insane finally.

I've already heard that the Qatar officials have promised to install massive air-conditioners all around the pitch to make it possible to play football in the expected 45-50C heat!!

Stupid.....

There's nothing to do in Doha......fans will be walking around in intense heat or just staying in their hotels all the time......it will be an awful World Cup for fans......even if they do lift the alcohol ban.......

So far as I know, Qatar is one of the countries that really be willing to spend money in sports. It doesnt have to be good to be the host of a sport event, or does it?

If LeDakar could be the most popular rally racing in the world, if 2006 Asian Olympics and all the other professional games can be hosted successfully in this country, why wouldn't a football game be as well?

I didn't say anything about Qatar being good or bad at football.......USA held a fantastic World Cup in 1994 despite being awful at football!! Laughing

Qatar is simply not a fun place.....it's stupidly hot, it has no historical monuments, no places of interest, nothing to do, no drinking culture, no nightlife........it's basically just putting tens of thousands of World Cup fans in a place none of them want to be.

Seems very like the Korean Grand Prix in Jeolla-do!!
