Yesterday I saw waygooks sitting on the ground outside the subway sandwich store drinking beer and talking.

I just wanted to say that I am embarrassed by them. I think it screams "we are too poor to sit inside a normal bar and get drunk."

Poor show.

Get used to it, creep. They especially love to sit out in front of convenience stores as well. "Look at me, I'm saving 5000 won by not going to a bar/호프"

You mean sitting on a table and chair? That's OK. I do that myself. I am talking sitting on the ground. You know the dirty ground on the narrow pavement in Itaewon. Ugghh.

Ick, sitting on the ground....in Itaewon nonetheless. Embarassed

I really enjoy having a drink outside, and yesterday was actually not that cold so a drink outdoors would have been lovely. I wish Korea was more open about outdoor drinking....but they aren't. Crying or Very sad

I miss that about Europe with the beer gardens, going to the park for a picnic and drinks with friends. It is nice. But I agree that sitting on the actual ground in Korea while drinking is kind of dirty and strange. Were they already wasted or just acting completely normal?

It was probably just a very subtle street performance art, and/or protest piece, about foreigner homelessness in Korea..........you know how creative and spontaneous we foreigners can be!!

OP just didn't get it.... Laughing

I saw an Adjumma sitting in the middle of a side street tying a little girls shoes. Like sitting on the asphalt in the path of cars.

in regards to the OP, yes that is stupid and lame.

You're joking right? This is one of the most liberal places I've ever been when it comes to drinking. No one, cops included, will say anything if you're drinking outside. That is, unless it's before or around noon.

Wow, open your eyes.

Unfortunately, yes.

I spotted the "tight jeans tucked into beat up untied high tops topped off with a turquoise t-shirt under a red/black flannel shirt complimented with an unkempt hair cut/shaggy beard combo with large thick framed glasses" variety several times yesterday.

yeah, seems like a lot of subcultures have gotten into korea now. only just a few years ago, the demographics of foreign teachers seemed to be pretty similar... mid 20's, been graudated for a year or two, wanted to try something new....

but it seems like it's the new trend to teach in asia.

When summer comes around, the sleeves will be oh so carefully "ripped" off the flannel and that unkempt hair will be complemented by a trucker's cap with an obscure reference to some nonexistent roadside diner/junkyard and the thick framed glasses will have been replaced by State Trooper/motorcycle cop full frame sunglasses.

Now that I think about it....you are right, I guess I worded it poorly. I'm comparing to eastern Europe.

What I should have said was....as much/often as Koreans drink, I wish the culture of outdoor drinking was as proportionately acceptable. I shared a bottle of soju w/ my Korean friend once on the street (his idea, in a crowded bar area, we were sitting on a little concrete ledge thingy, not the ground) and he hid the bottle behind us and I felt a tad uncomfortable while we were drinking it and people were walking by. Why should I have? 모르겠어

I have seen old korean women pull down their pants, proceed to squat and begin defecating on the sidewalk. I have seen korean men passed out on the street laying in their own urine (all in the middle of the afternoon).

But foreigners sitting outside talking while drinking!! wow thats no class!!

There are many different levels of classlessness. I could take a crap, smear it all over my face, and go piss outside a wedding hall as the new bride and groom are coming out. Pretty classless. But it wouldn't change the fact that people drinking on the street in Itaewon are lame.

I hate that argument- well, I have seen Korean people doing worse, so....

Back home there was a guy in my neighborhood who would beg for money by grabbing everybody who walked by and not letting them go until they physically freed themselves or gave him money. By your logic, I should be able to do whatever I want, so long as it doesn't approach that level of classlessness. Pretty weak argument, imho.
