i searched, but i keep finding the same topics (countries, plays, movie english, etc.). this is my third camp session with my current school (which has never happened to me before), so i need a lot of new ideas -- i can't reuse my staples again.
what i've got right now:
-the usual introduction name games
-making computer animated cartoons and presenting them to the class
-a cooking class (something not requiring an oven or microwave)
-science projects (i've done the egg drop before, but i might try rockets this time)
...? |

I am doing a full week project with my 5th and 6th graders. We are going to first do the usual icebreakers. But after that I am going to split them into teams, read fables, design movie posters, create a script, animal masks, design the storyboard, dress rehersal, shoot their films, make some sandwiches, make dirt pie, do relay races. And the last activity we will watch the movies after I edit them with iMovie. And I'll throw in a whole bunch of games and stuff during the week as well.
I'm pretty excited about it. I think the kids are going to enjoy it a lot. |

our most successful camp so far was when we used a single story as a theme for the camp. we did alice in wonderland. i used the screenshots available online and made a ppt story. we did one chapter a day. every chapter led us to some type of target language for that day. rabbit being late was a day for time, we did comparatives for alice's size when she would grow and shrink, etc. i used a lot of my old ppts but changed the characters to alice in wonderland characters. tons of ideas for crafts online. we had a mad hatter tea party on the last day and watched the disney version.
we're in the process of picking a new story/movie for this camp...perhaps wall-e with a robot theme...
good luck! |

Not to hijack your thread or anything, but I have a question about winter camp and I don't want to start a new thread about it.
How many periods should I be teaching normal English lessons? I'm looking at the lesson plan from last year and there are classes where the teacher taught normal topics like prepositions, comparatives, time words, and skills/abilities vocab. Looking at the winter camp plan from eatyourkimchi.com, there are many normal lessons where they teach about verb conjunctions, greeting dialogues, and vocab.
I would much rather do fun things like games, skits, magic show, etc. but I don't know if I should plan more actual lessons. |

Totally up to you (and your school). I do a regular lesson at the beginning of the day to placate the parents then switch to fun stuff for the rest of the day. |

For cooking class, try cornflake cakes. No oven or microwave required. Add some fruit to make it a bit more healthy.
If you have the run of the school, try a treasure/scavenger hunt. Use online-stopwatch.com to time the teams, open a new window for each team, and let each team start 2 mins after the last. Just make sure the kids know not to move the clues from their original places. Also, try to pay everyhing out before the kids arrive at school. My list of clues is below, you can always adjust it as you see fit:
Number 1
136+22+73+2-84-10=Go to this place (a room number)
Number 2
Bring the teacher something he can read.
Number 3
You are very hungry. Where can you get food in school? (school kitchen/home ec room)
Number 4
Bring the teacher something wet.
Number 5
Where boys can go, but girls cannot. (bathroom)
Number 6
Bring the teacher something white that you can recycle.
Number 7
I like watching movies,
and you do too! (put a film on in a random classroom far away from wherever you are. I downloaded Katyn for this very purpose because it's all in Polish and looks very dreary, so the kids won't get distracted from the hunt)
Number 8
Go to the teacher and sing a song.
Number 9
The next place is very trashy! (school garbage area)
Number 10
You need to drink water. (drinking fountain)
Number 11
Score a goal with the next clue. (soccer pitch)
Number 12
Give the teacher something white
that can fly. (give them a few pieces of A4 at the start, hopefully they'll make you a paper airplane)
Number 13
Solve this puzzle:

What has 2 wings, but is not alive? (airplane, a follow on from 12)
Number 14
Hit the target to get the next clue! (kids have to hit a small target in your classroom)
Number 15
You are very sick. (nurses office)
Number 16
Somewhere in the halls,
are some ping-pong balls.
Bring one to the teacher to finish!
Enjoy! |
