Hey,
I am a complete newbie to this forum and pretty much to ESL.

I am applying to the GEPIK programme (as i don't think i stand much of a chance going for the Seoul one) and i'm not sure what to put down for my preferred location.

I would like to be within an hour or so of Seoul if possible and in more of a city than rural location.
I am more interested in shopping, culture, photography etc than drinking.

I am a female and don't know anybody teaching in Korea so would like to be in a safe fairly central location. I plan to tick the 'near subway' box too but if anyone can suggest some cities/towns worth me researching into further that would be a great help.

Thanks Smile

Bundang, Ilsan, Gwacheon, Anyang, Gunpo, and Uiwang are all worth checking out.

The ideas above are good ones. The 2 best ones are Ilsan and Bundang, in my opinion (both new cities with lots of mod cons).

But if i had to pick one of those two i'd pick Ilsan;

Islan is closer to Hongdae, City Hall, and Itaewon (all those 3 places are in Seoul).

Bundang is closer to Gangnam (also in Seoul).

So with Ilsan you're closer to 3 important places in Seoul, with Bundang you're only closer to 1 important place in Seoul. Bear in mind this is only my opinion. Smile I mean the idea of an "important place in seoul" is subjective and is merely my opinion. The geographical information i provided on the proximity to the aforementioned places in Seoul is an undeniable fact, just look at a map to confirm it. Im talking way too much on this subject. I'm going to stop now. Have a nice day.
Good luck in your decision Smile

Pyeongchon/Beomgae is also a new city and I think the location is a bit better than Ilsan, subway connectivity wise.

probably agree subway connectivity wise though Ilsan has the fairly newish Gyoengui line which improved things (rather than having to take line 3 like before).

Saying that.....I used to live in Ilsan and rarely bothered to take the subway. Simply because there are fast Express buses to just about everywhere in Seoul....way faster than the subway.

Ilsan>Sinchon (25 mins in non peak times as opposed to the subway). Also the 921 bus to Hongdae (takes longer but faster than the subway also)

Ilsan > City Hall/ Seoul Station/ Gangnam / Gwangwhamun etc....all pretty fast too.

These buses run pretty late too (2.10am last bus from Sinchon to Ilsan)

Pyongchon is pretty far to the likes of Sinchon (57 mins), Itaewon, (45 mins). I guess it depends on what the OP wants to do.

I guess I am biased because I used to live there but for me Ilsan is a nicer place to live than Pyongcheon and has Lake Park and access to Costco/E-mart etc nearby.

I like Bucheon, I've been here 2 years and I like it a lot. There is a great foreigner community here. It's between Incheon and Seoul.

In the southeast, Bundang is cool on its own merits and not too far from Gangnam.

In the south, Gwacheon is also reasonably close to Gangnam and other central locations. I've never hung out there so I'm not sure what it's like.

In the southwest, Gwangmyeong is ridiculously close to Hongdae (I'm not sure why it isn't considered part of Seoul) and it has its own pretty lively foreigner community.

Further west, Bucheon is pretty cool and linked to Seoul's subway network via rapid train.

Any of those options would be pretty good I'd say.

Personally, I would not accept a job with GEPIK that wasn't close to the subway. But then, I want to work in Seoul proper and am only applying to GEPIK as backup...

The 27 cities and 4 rural counties that comprise the GEPIK program are:
 Seungnam City  Ansan City  Hwasung City  Uijeongbu City
 Suwon City  Anyang City  Pyeongteak City  Pocheon City
 Goyang City  Namyangju City  Gwangmyeong City  Gimpo City
 Bucheon City  Siheung City  Gwangju City  Anseong City
 Yongin City  Gunpo City  Guri City  Paju City
 Gwacheon City  Yangju City  Yangpyeong County  Osan City
 Gapyeong County  Icheon City  Hanam City  Yeoju County
 Yeoncheon County  Uiwang City  Dongducheon CIty

I know this is a bit of a mess, but i am leaning toward Ilsan and can't seem to find it on the list, I am guessing it is within one of the cities/areas mentioned above?

I am going to put is as a first choice anyway. I cant seem to find much out on Anyang.

thanks Smile

I was told by my recruiter that GEPIK was no longer taking applications. Is that not true? How are you able to send them an app?

I was shooting for Suwon (first choice) or Anyang before my recruiter told me it was closed Sad

I was under the impression that GEPIK no longer did a central hiring process and that each school was responsible for hiring its own teacher through a recruiter?

That might be why your recruiter isn't accepting apps cause they have no more GEPIK positions? Anyone got some better info on this?

i am applying to korvia but haven't sent it off yet so i may get the same response. i think i am applying too early so not sure if i should hold off a bit.

i graduate in june/july 2011 and hope to go in august 2011 so not sure whether to apply now or in say february.

i dont understand the need to get all the crazy documents they require before you even know if you've been accepted.

what recruiter told you it was closed?

I just accpeted a GEPIK job on Tuesday that my recruiter found for me (it is in Anseong though, which is an area,I'm guessing, isn't really "desirable"). The paperwork was a bit of a pain in the butt, however, I sent it off today and hopefully it's all filled out to their liking. Good luck!

It's in the southern part of the province. You'll have to learn about the buses to get to Pyeongtaek, which should take less than 1 hour. Once you get there you can get on the subway at the Pyeongtaek station #1 line to Seoul or points south. Once you learn about the transportation part, it'll be a lot of fun for you.

No one will talk to you until January at the earliest, more likely March.
