My school does not have a single document camera. However we have a 60" Touch Screen LCD and a Virtual Reality Studio (green screen with camcorder synced to special software on the PC). Go figure?
Spend it or lose it. It was built into the budget already. It's not your job to save, leave that to the guys who make the budget. |

I have one of those $1000 document cameras and don't use it, because it's too cumbersome where it's knocked over easily and would need a dedicated desk space with permanent video line installation. Need a 3 way out RGB connector they don't make so the overhead projector, monitor, and the document camera can be all connected at the same time with no fumbling under the desk for a connection while students wait.
You can use the digital camera to do book and hand writing photos to easily and quickly put up on screen via the PC. I use the white board to demonstrate handwriting.
OP is a lucky duck, because it shows they have interest and support in OP as a valued teacher. The money could had been pocketed as a bonus or wasted on food and soju.
Puppets and other colorful materials are a great idea for role plays and skits. A stationary shop like Dream Depot is your best bet for classroom theme and art related materials. Instead of looking for puppets, what if you got a load of arts and crafts materials so you can do mask and puppet making activities before practicing the dialogs?
If you use a book for afters school or camp classes, buy each student a book instead of photocopying in the library. You can also host a small English library that you also use for after school and camp story telling/reading lessons.
Replace or add new fixtures and furniture? Need a shoebox for all those mismatched cluttered shoes in the doorway? Need a better teachers desk where you can easily use the PC while teaching without having to walk all the way around it to the back stretching for the mouse causing you too struggle due to bad timing? I think using a simple metal PC stand at the front of the room with the PC and monitor mounted would be ideal while you have the big desk elsewhere since it's only in your way while teaching. Not to use and stand behind the PC the whole time, but to have easy access when you needed something onscreen 10 seconds ago.

exactly the wrong attitude to have... You know when they start providing free lunches to students alot of the savings are coming out of English budgets.... that translates to hiring less native teachers, the governer already said he will abolish the policy objective to have one native in each school. Free meals is expensive I figure at my school with about 600 students it works out to the equivilant to the cost of 6 to 8 teachers. |

Yep, we are using our English budget to serve food to the poor students who are the after school students. My co-teacher told me today there was lots of excess money for everything such as camps, equipment, and field trips 2 years ago, but nothing now. Many in my district are on free lunches, because it's kind of a poor area using credit for the new developments instead of big companies putting on a strong local economy like you have in other parts of the country. There isn't a whole lot of high paying careers in the Dangjin rice bowl area of Chungnamdo like in Cheonan, Gyeonggi and Seoul. By the way co-teachers talk, the budget is decreasing and I see it, because there's no extra support outside of the curriculum and what was purchased 2 years ago. At least pay comes through on time. It could be worse. |

I'd be sure to have a lamination machine and a color printer. You can makes laminated masks for role-plays, and once you make them, they'll last a long time. You can print off tons of board games and stuff like that too.
Also, the small white boards come in handy. Golden bell is always fun.
I'd consider getting a book or two on English games, you can get lots of ideas from something like that.
One of those remote controls for doing ppts with a built in laser pointer would be cool, I've always wanted one of those.
I've been to a school that has an area on the wall covered in felt. You can use this to put up lamination with velcro stickers on the back. You can play a lot of games with something like that. |

Definitely an overhead projector. One that you can put the text book on and it projects the textbook onto a large screen. Great for showing the kids some examples of the book related tasks.

Document camera (connect to your bigscreen or projector. So your kids can see the paper you're writing on. It's basically a new kind of overhead transparency. Minus the markers, annoying heat and big bulky mirrors.

Don't all class rooms have those? in my school they do and its not particularly decked out compared to others.
Honestly though don't just spend the money because you have only spend what you need. The problem with government workers is they think they have spend the entire budget they get on something and just waste it. There is also an entire private secotor industry devoted to ripping off the education deptartment. Ask your co teachers how much a the kids desks costs, did you really need that new flat screen tv, if your school bought the materials boxes for the current English text books they cost something like 5mil per grade (this was the price 10 years ago or whenever they came out) for what is basically just a bunch of mostly useless flash cards. |
My schools all have those, yes. it's kind of 'old technology' quoting my co-teach. I think it's brilliant though... I'm old-school and prefer working and walking around checking what they're doing.
the story is that if we don't use the money, they may receive less next year...
Thanks for the wonderful advice people.

which is why i sometimes use all the resources, like that document camera thingy, as well as that other blue/green screen thing with changing backgrounds.... to justify their purchase. it gets tedious at times... but Parents wanna see the stuff used. anyways..different strokes for different folks...

We got 4 of those green felt thingy stuff we turned 2 of them in Soccer pitches for the 2010 World Cup...Kids had a blast!!!
Luckily the school got one of those wireless mouse stuff, so i can be all over and quickly go to next screen, adjust volumes, etc...like a regular mouse...Dayhanmingu technology for ya!!
we've got these blinds running down all the windows with vocabulary and situational English where the kids can press the tip of the pen(which has a sensor) and they can hear the english/korean of that particular chart... there's also this biggish pen-thing that looks like a microphone they can press on any from 70 Charts at the back of the classroom and the pic with sounds and vocab appears on the Plasma/Lcd infront...massive XCanvas... the money these guys spend already amazes me. Back home some of our schools only have Black/Green boards with chalk and maybe an over head projector if they're lucky.
Great responses.
