Hey all, I'm planning on doing a runner and want to know the logistics of it. I don't need any morality lectures or anything like that. My director has been on my ass the entire time I've been here and to be honest, I'm only here because I needed the money anyway. No amount of money is worth the shit I've had to put up with at this school. So, I'm leaving. What is the worst case scenario? Will Immigration contact my school? Any stories, minus the lectures because you can't change my mind and every time the director and supervisor shit on me I feel less and less guilty, would be of appreciated. I'm a little nervous about getting caught and have heard some awful stories about it. I'm not leaving on a school day so that should decrease some of the worries, but it's not. Anyway, thanks a lot. |

Hand in your alien card at the airport to the immigration people. No one will call your school or even look twice.
There's nothing preventing you from leaving. |

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free. |
Never done it myself but I agree with poster # 2

I have a pair of Nikes and some New balance.
I recommend that if you have larger feet wait until you go home and then buy them.
Nikes here are pretty expensive so go to China and buy a couple of pairs. |

Collect your last pay, then get on the plane the next day. However, if you are in a small town, be careful buying your ticket. The travel agent could tell your boss. Better to buy it online, out of town or by phone.

Aside from justbecause's rather snide humour, as other posters have stated, hand in your ARC and get out of dodge. Morality issues aside, simplify the matter by giving your 30 days notice and leave with pride and dignity intact. Choice is yours old son. |

I disagree.
If your boss is riding ya hard, giving that 30 days notice is just going to make it worse. Your boss will withhold LOTS if not ALL your money...he will probably MAKE you pay extra.
Sometimes the high road is the wrong road.
Get outta dodge! |

That's true, I waited out my notice...which turned into a 4 month notice with a written guarantee of a letter of release.
Still got fucked on pay and then the boss reported me as a runner even though I had the letter which he accused me of forging. A shit boss in this country will try and assrape you at every corner out of spite.
If you're going to quit a hellwon, just collect your last pay and get the *beep* outta Dodge!
You'd hope these scumbags would learn to treat their foreign teachers better after enough run out on them. Sadly, it's never their problem, that would amount to them having to admit to being wrong. |

I just pulled a runner almost 3 weeks ago
Just go to the airport hand in your Arc and fet on the plane. Nothing to worry about. I understand your concerns though, I was pretty freaked out before I left. here's a little advice, go to the bank and transfer all your money into your account at home. You'll get the best exchange rate. At least thats what I found anyway. |

I don't think morality can be put aside here, as that would be the main reason for not doing a runner, would it not?
Anyway, I think Sadsac and Homer's advice is all well and good under normal circumstances, but I've just seen far too many people get screwed out of money. When they ask to leave early, screwed. When they finish the contract, screwed. (Not all, so don't anybody jump all over me, I'm just saying it happens a lot.) I recently had a buddy whose boss loved him but tried to screw him over when he refused to re-sign to a crappier contract.
If I had a boss who treated me poorly, the only way I wouldn't do a runner would be if I was nearing the end of my contract, and I was willing to fight for the money he owed me. Otherwise, I'd be leaving on a jet plane...

If you get screwed out of money by someone who knows how powerless you are to stop them, how much of either will you be leaving with? |

If you can trust your boss, but plan to leave for other (non-urgent) reasons, then give 30 days notice.
If you can't trust your boss, run.
On the other hand, you could put your boss to the test. Give him 30 days notice, then see how he reacts and how he treats you. If he treats you like cr*p, run on the weekend, retaining that warm fuzzy feeling that you at least tried to do the right thing and were not reciprocated. However, leading up to the weekend run, be sure to use sleight of hand and play on words to throw him off the scent. Unlike bare-faced lying, reverse psychology is so far removed from the traditional Confucian way of thinking that it may as well be magic. |
