I think the game would be more exciting if there were 4-6 less players (2-3 from each team) that weren't on the field. It would mean more goals/less defenders. This is my view as an American. Are there are people from England/NZ/ Aus./Canada that feel this way, or would you never want to ruin the tradition of the sport??

Possibly lose one man and have ten a side, but just don't let it become like American sport where you have 30 substitutes being rotated every 30 seconds.

soccer is not so much about goals! we don't need to see 20goals in a game
it makes it more special when 1 or 2 goals is scored..
after the 5th goal you think the players are gonna run like crazy and celebrate the goal??? it will be like basketball then, shoot score, slap your team makes hand and prepare for the next move.. no big deal..

Why isn't there an option for "fewer players"?

The major problem I have with the low scoring nature of futbol is when (and this happens a lot from what I've observed) a team is rewarded a chip shot that takes a match/series/championship for a blatant dive or a questionable call. In a sport where 2-0 is considered a spanking, I just can't get over that.

It's an essential part of the game, but I think if they removed offsides and allowed for fast breaks the game would be 100X more palatable for American appetites. Of course, you'd need more subs because, despite the notion that "soccer players do it for 90 minutes" those guys spend an AWFUL amount of time standing around and/or lightly jogging. I think someone coined the term "total football" several years back to describe the North Koreans' approach of just insane conditioning and going full-bore the entire game. That would be fun to see.

It would be nice if the net was a bit bigger, maybe not for the goalie but I'd like to see a few more goals scored which might take out some of the desperate measures like diving in the box which ruins this game.

Actually it would be a better sport if it was nothing but shootouts for 90 minutes.

There is a game for less players

it's called five-a-side...

(usually played indoors or on a smaller pitch)

Make the field larger.

Or, make the ball much smaller and flatter, play on ice with skates and a stick. Now THAT would be a sport worth watching. Fast, physical, with lots of passing and shooting and no less of a celebration when a goal is scored, yet with 7 goals a game average (4-3 or 5-2, etc) instead of a mere 1 or 2. Penalize diving of any kind to the point where almost nobody does it. Substitute players often and quickly, keeping them fresh instead of dogging it for stretches. What a game that would be.

Maybe it would be more exciting with more players. 45 on each side.

"if it ain't broke don't fix it"

why change the most beautiful game God ever created?

The only changes I might make:

NO substitutes especially in International fixtures

Increase playing time from 90 to 100 minutes as so many games now have so much added time...

an interesting post but I'm not certain about the premise. wouldn't some teams adopt say a 5-3-1 formation and you would still see nil nil.?

and outside the FIFA tournaments the footie is not that low scoring ---check the scores from England every weekend and you will see 3-2 4-1 etc etc.

Americans like the idea of high scoring games because it keeps them focused on something they really have no interest in, and that's their own opinion.

Most football fans in britain, ireland, spain etc are happy enough with the game as it is. I know when I watch a match as a neutral I would prefer it to be a close game with a chance of either side winning than a game where it finished 5 or 6 zero.

As said above league games in England have higher scores than in world cups and fifa qualifications. there are usually games with 3-1 / 4-2 / 4-1 / 3-0.....of course there are also 0-0 games but these can be exciting too as there can be lots of attacks but just great goalkeeping and defending. For instance Birmingham beat Chelsea 1-0 about 3 weeks ago. Chelsea had something like 18 shots on target and about another 12 or so off target, these don't count the chances that never make it as far as the goal such as missed crosses etc.

Some games are boring. Last weekend for example was a terrible weekend to watch football in the premiership. The games were terrible on saturday. The chelsea v tottenham game on sunday was good though.

Some people like soccer, some people don't. They are never gonna attract all the north americans to watch it as they have their own sports, the same wasy North america can't attract Europe to play their sports.

I would like them to bring in video technology though.
