So please keep your answers as simple as possible.
My friend just left me with his desktop computer. Everything included, tower, speakers, monitor etc. The only thing he took out was his hard drive.
Is it possible to buy a new hard drive and put it in the computer? If so, how much would one cost? Easy to do?
Any advice would me much appreciated and please keep in mind that I am a total dipshit. |

Yes. A new hard drive should cost you between 20,000 and 200,000W depending on what you intend to use it for. My guess is that you probably want a terabyte hard drive as that is sufficient for everything you want now and everything you could want to do for the next six months. Go wherever you want to buy one.
You will need a screwdriver, a hard drive, and not to be made of static electricity. Open your computer, find the only place where the hard drive could possibly go (diagrams on the internet exist) and install. It will take several twists of your wrists to install. |

He took out the hard drive? Was it the hard drive with Windows on? Does this computer still start up? |

A few factors.
1. How much storage space do you need? You can get a fast 1 TB Samsung F3 for under 80,000.
2. How old is the computer? If the motherboard has the old style IDE connection and no SATA connection (about 6-7 years ago) you are limited to slower, older HDDs.
Hopefully it supports SATA2 in which case you just plug one SATA cable from the HDD to the MB and then find a usable cord from the power supply to the HDD. |

This is what I know. He said "I am taking out the hard drive, you can have the rest of the computer." Since that statement, he has moved to China and his computer is sitting on my kitchen table and I haven't touched it.
Should I figure this stuff out before I attempt to buy a hard drive? The vendors at Yongsan are going to loooooooooveeeeee me. |

Is it ancient? Can you get any details of the parts inside?
No need to go to Yongsan. Just tell us what the motherboard is. Or take a pic of it or a part number or something. |

My guess is you have no hard drive, therefore no operating system......but maybe not....maybe he left you his OS drive but took his data drive......who knows until you tell us. |

if your willing to dish out the money. I'd say get a solid state drive just to run windows off of (Maybe 50, 60 bucks) and a separate 1tb drive for everything else.
If you use 1tb as general go to for everything. Unless you split it into 3-5 partitions. The thing's too big and it'll unnecessarily slow down your computer. |

buy a hard drive. you might want to try to find out what kind of motherboard it is, google it and see if it supports sata2 and sata3 (or ssd).
dl the drivers for the motherboard.
buy windows.
load the windows and then the dirvers. |
