English kindergarten suspended over rotten food
By Kang Shin-who
An English kindergarten in southern Seoul, has been suspended from running their educational business after it had allegedly fed rotten food to children, causing them to suffer from stomachaches, vomiting and rashes for months.
EWAS specialized in English education for young children and charged about 2 million won ($1,733) a month in tuition per child.
The Seoul education authorities confiscated the rotten food that had been stored in freezers at the institute. The shelf life of some packs of bacon had expired more than seven years ago.
We will suspend the business and take punitive action after investigating further, said Kim Sang-yeol, an official from Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
The Seoul education office also requested the health authorities to conduct an epidemiological investigation after collecting stool samples from the 33 children.
One parent said that her child had complained of abdominal pains for months. I was horrified to find out that the refrigerator was full of food that had gone bad, she said.
Another mother said that her child was suffering from stomachache and a rash, but in the beginning, she thought that the child was pretending to be ill due to stress because of studying in English.

Wow. Does anyone know anything about this situation? Can a hagwon be suspended over food? |

Clearly they were endangering the health and welfare of the students. PORK THAT HAS BEEN EXPIRED FOR 7 YEARS?! That is nasty. |

That bacon was older than the children! 2 million won?! I'd send the bastards to prison. |

Bacon is suspended in salt, though, so it's not THAT bad. Just extra extra extra cured! |

That's downright terrible, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a really dump accident out of ignorance. I noticed you have to watch the expiration dates closely after I got a few surprises earlier this year just because the package looked good. I've never had a problem back home with expiration dates, but it's especially a problem with imports over here. I've never seen anything 7 years out of date though. Things do go bad even though it's salted and frozen.
They need to also investigate the distributors and salesmen dealing the rotten food to determine if they too are liable.

I don't think sailors from the 1700's who were circumventing the globe ate salted meat that was older than 7 years old.
Good point NYCGal. I think we've got a few new Korean vegetarians growing up now. |

You have to realize that the date is still way after the meat was cured. It takes into account that it's salted and (maybe) frozen. If you freeze something, it gives it a few months extra (3 at most, usually). 7 years... Poor little kids. I hope none of them have any permanent ailments because of this. |

Yep. Short of copy for the print deadline? Just make something up!
I'd need another source for this story before I take it seriously. |

The Korea Times? Not a reliable source of news about the hagwon industry? Since when? |

You think EWAS would stand by idly and allow their name to be slandered by an entirely fictitious story? Give your head a shake. |
