What's the word on rooting since z4root is gone from the market? I would like to get the market enabler. I had to ditch appbrain because i have the updated version of the actual market that doesn't accept the fast web installer app from appbrain.
Mymarket still won't download apps so i've resorted to torrents and rapidshare-type downloads for games. |
You can try going to http://www.applanet.net/ and downloading their app. It allows you to access a "black" market with all apps for "free" if you don't have any problems with that. I was able to get z4root and OCLF there without any problems. |
Awesome, thanks for the tip! I'll check it out when i get home. |

FWIW Applanet did have some server problems in the past so don't give up if all you get is a frame and a white screen. Just try a few hours later (or days). It seems to be more available these days.
Main issue with Applanet is that updates to apps are not as frequent as on the regular market (because someone has to "crack" the app first) and there are few if any Korean apps.
In the end, remember to purchase the full (legal) app if you use it frequently. If you also use Appbrain then you can check on their website how much money your commercial software is worth. After 2 months of "testing" I ended up buying around 80 $ worth of apps that I found really useful, and donated to a few freeware developers.
Still I wonder how some developers decide on a price. There are breathtakingly usefull apps that sell for $0.99 as well as similar but only slightly more or less functional apps for 5x that. Plus, compared to the Apple Store, there's way too much garbage and noise that makes browsing the Android store a chore. |

I got applanet installed and it works pretty good. I only got one game to try out so far, and have had no issues like i did with appbrain and mymarket. Thanks again for the tip!
*Edited*
The main reason i got applanet was to get z4root so i could use market enabler, therefore negating my need to root. I may still root just for the speed benefits. |

Its taken me 5 months to realise that dragging the SMS envelope icon on the locked screen page to the jigsaw puzzle type thing opens the message!
Nice touch, is that Android or Samsuig? |

Don't want to make you feel bad, but I figured that out with my first text!!
Don't know if it's Android or Touchwiz......
Actually, it took me 5 months of ownership to realize that holding your finger down on an unwanted spam text brings up a handy delete button. You don't have to actually open the text to delete it......duh.. |

no no, after 5 months that was my first txt
holding the home key does some useful shortcuts on the home screen too, lots of holding on this phone! I've got an issue with in syncing my gmail/outlook contacts, but haven't quite figures out what the phone is doing now to explain what I need it to do,
but basically I think I want it to sync my outllook (exchange) contacts, but only in the email app, and only sync my gmail contacts in the gmail app, I don't want the phonebook to be full of everyone I've ever emailed, make any sense?
/edit, was just looking at this again, it doesn't sync my outlook/exhchange email contacts at all, but then I've no address book set up in outlook, just the recent emailed contacts pops down when I type in the to bar for an email. Sync contacts is selected in the phone email app options. Will look in Outlook |

What does rooting your phone actually do to the phone?? I know it sounds dumb to ask but I have no idea what it does to your phone and how it works?! Is it similar to jailbreaking? ? |

Similar though not exactly the same. On Android you can already do many things out of the box which would require a jailbreak on iPhone. If you're familiar with Linux, "root" gives you somethinglike God access to your system, in particular the file system. Similar to Admin status on WIdows, I guess.
It is required for a few very useful things: the "lagfix" which at least for some time, makes your phone (in particular Galaxy-S) run faster or at least seem to run faster - this is an additional step, rooting alone only allows the lagfix application to run by removing the safety barriers by the OS; backup apps such as Titanium Backup can work on the entire system (including app datam system apps etc.); several OS level apps e.g. task killers can do their work more thoroughly.
I have only a few apps on my phone that require rooting (but are worth it):
- CacheMate (not used often)
- Extended Controls
- Market Enabler (necessary for downloads of games)
- Lagfix
- Root Explorer (a file manager)
- SetCPU (rais the lower CPU frequency limit so that I can play music without skipping
- Titanium Backup
This means the other 120+ apps that I use or plan to use one day in the future do not require rooting at all. But I really couldn't do without Titanium Backup and SetCPU (my music would skip every minute or so even after lagfix).
There is no risk in rooting (you can't harm your phone in trying, either it works or nothing happens) but afterwards, you're perfectly able to ruin your Android installation
I guess you can cause some grief with a botched lagfix.
Root level file managers would allow you to delete system files/directories which is normally not a good thing (but you can set R/O mode for the system partition)
I really recommend Titanium Backup because it can uninstall all of the Samsung stock software (better even, it can "freeze" apps so that they remain on the phone, but are invisible to you and the system. Easy to restore after you realize that you just accidentally removed the MMS app or Market )
Alternatively, I could have just answered your question with "yes" but I'm full of caffeine. |

I've been frustrated with the volume output of my Galaxy. The stock headphones weren't that great yet they outputted a decent volume level. When using other headphones (high-end or not) the volume simply doesn't get very high. In fact it's not loud enough for me to properly enjoy a movie on a busy subway for instance.
Well I found my solution... sort of. I picked up a pair of Samsung branded in-ear style earphones that include the microphone so I take calls with them on from the earphone shop in hongdae (go left out exit 5, 2 blocks on the left, yellow sign) for 12,000! They were OEM and came without packaging. The build quality is much better than the stock headphones, they look much better too (black with silver accents) and... they sound much better. They also hit the high volume levels of the stock headphones. I'm still sad to see my collection of $75+ earphones sitting on the sidelines but at least I can better enjoy my Galaxy as a media player and still handle calls.
Just a tip for anyone with a Galaxy near Hongdae. They don't speak English but just show them your phone. They had 3 different sets. Look for the ones as I described. Also the chord is very nice and thick, it won't crack or break or generate that annoying ruffling sound you sometimes here from thin chords that rub on your jacket and zipper. |

jhicks99, thanks for the tip! I was looking for some replacement headphones. BTW in addition to your valid technical complaints, I'm also unhappy wearing that bright whitecable with my Winter dark clothes... way too obvious. So a spare set of dark hphones that actually work would be perfect.

Not sure if I should start a new thread for this, but I'll try it here first. I need help! Does anybody know a failsafe way to backup SMS (and perhaps MMS) messages? I've tried everything I could find and the result is always the same - all my text messages are "added" to the voice call count (I can check that with 3rd party phone usage apps) and don't appear in the text msg list (which also messes up the usage statistics).
There's actually one message which I once sent via a desktop app to my phone; this is the ONLY SMS that is found by all apps. The other 500-odd SMS are simply not there.
So, has anybody found a proper solution to backup and restore SMS texts? Did someone say "Kies"? I hope not.
NB: That's one of the very few incidents where Google was not my friend. |
