I am currently teaching English in Korea at a Hagwon. As I have now learned, Hagwon jobs can either be a hit or a miss. Well, this one has been a miss and I have decided to quit. My contract says that I must give 45 days notice but I have heard that often time Hagwons don't actually pay you if you give your notice. Are there any legal concerns I need to be aware of if I decide to do a midnight run?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Thank you so much. This is really helpful. I just don't want to make this more of a headache.

None. Just make sure you leave the day AFTER payday and not the day before.

Fukoaka is the fastest way; however, India, the Philippines, Indonesia or Thailand can be really cheap if you want to make a vacation out of it. I remember changing out a visa staying throughout Thailand at guesthouses where the staff outnumber the guests 2:1 and the cost per night was only 4 dollars a night.

I would make a trip out of it and have some fun unless you are pegged to start your new gig right away.

No legalities to worry about. Tell no one. Give no notice. Act like all is well when at work. Organize to leave after your last paycheck. Collect money. Go.

You're right Korean hagwon jobs are hit or miss - usually miss but you're lucky if you come up on the other side. I've had both. My last one was a miss so I did the midnight run and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my escape including some delicious curry chicken dumpling soup in Hong Kong on my way home...
