ESL Teaching Community
I want to make a good impression. I have seen conflicting info on CV's. I heard short and sweet to detailed? Cover Letters short
How different is it from US business resume and cover letter?
I have a BS in Finance and minimal teaching experience.
Thank you for your kind and considerate response.

CV or resume?
They ARE different animals.
For an ESL teaching position in Korea given your bare minimum of qualifications:
=Cover letter of 1 page (or less) and personalized for the specific job app.
=resume of 1-2 pages
=contact information
=education
=job experience (keep it short and simple - it is NOT related).
=hobbies that may relate (play an instrument, drama experience, work with kids).
Don't bother with lots of extraneous material - the people who receive it won't be able to read and understand the nuances of it anyway.
KEEP IT SIMPLE - and make darn sure you run a spell checker over it. The reader may not understand the nuances of English but you can bet they can spell.

Here's the cover letter I wrote for all my applications, nice and general, but it got me a ton of offers
Dear Sir or Madam,
Please consider me for a position as an English language instructor at your educational institution in Korea. I was born and raised in the United States of America and possess a great understanding of the English language. I can read, write, and speak English at an advanced level and I would be very effective at teaching the language to students. I have earned a Bachelors degree from a top American university, **** University. Furthermore, I am currently working on my Masters degree at ***** University. It is my goal to save enough while working in Korea so that I can complete my Masters when I return to the States.
Education has always been important to me. I have a great appreciation for knowledge and learning and the benefits these pursuits have on ones life. I believe teaching others and helping them learn is an important and rewarding pursuit, for which I would be well suited. Through my various jobs and volunteer experiences I have learned what it takes to be an effective coworker, professional, and employee. I have learned how to resolve problems and help others in a professional manner. Furthermore, I have experience working with children that I gained while employed as a ******** at *******.
I have a lot of interest in Korea, in its history, its culture, and marvelous economic growth. I have a love for travel and history, and I find working in a new environment to be very stimulating. I would cherish the opportunity take part in helping educate people in such a fascinating and booming part of the world. Please see my resume on the following page for a complete listing of my academic and work history. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
*****
