It seems every school i get an offer for, everyone on here says stay away (even though sometimes a school gets a decent review now and then). I am getting very frustrated!

Getting offers for GnB, Avalon all of which I have heard horror stories about.

Does anyone work at one now with openings in february/march? haha

or suggestions on good ones they've worked at and contact emails?

From what I've read, with big chains it depends on which branch you're at. I just wish people wouldn't take jobs with obviously bad contract conditions, which in Korea usually means long hours for average pay. Some hagwons are asking you to be there 9 1/2 hours a day for 2.2, or 10 1/2 hours a day for 2.5.

Go for the equivalent of a 30 x 50-minute class (not "30-hour") teaching schedule with no more than 8 hours per day on site. Then roll the dice and take the plunge, unless you can afford to blow through lots of money waiting for a "perfect" job, which might end up not being a good fit for you anyway.

Good Hagwan - doesn't that qualify as an oxymoron?

In a word no. It's always going to be about making making them money and paying you will be the absolute last priority. Avoid avoid avoid. Yeah I am feeling a bit bitter today, and yes I work in a Hagwon Crying or Very sad

Maybe, but there are exceptions that prove the rule.

I'm very happy at my hagwon, and for an entry level job in Korea I personally think hagwons kick public school behind every time (except on the issue of holidays).

All you have to do is do your homework. I made sure I spoke to both foreign teachers before I signed a contract, and asked all the questions I wanted to. I personally think this is the single most important thing you can do when choosing a hagwon.

6 months now, and very much looking forward to the next 6. All the people I work with are decent, I have a good schedule, I'm always paid on time and the owner has always paid flights home/severance etc. on time (based on information from the last few years).

Why do you ask?

There are good hakwons, but it's always a risk because if it's bad you won't know until it's too late. That said, I would rather take my chances at a hakwon than work at a public school.

I work at a GnB and I love the school, the teachers are great, the director is really helpful, I have never had a problem with pay, sick days or vacation and I'm in my second year. The books suck, however my school is flexible so aslong as the books get covered i am free to do my own things in class.

Any particular reason you feel this way? Just curious.

Small class sizes, far less discipline required, no co-teacher drama, higher pay, better workplaces (they don't open the windows at hagwons in the middle of winter), more enthusiastic learners.
