| So I watched the TV show "Iris" and thought it was pretty good. I wanna watch some more similar shows, but I know the majority of the K dramas are romances aimed at women audiences. Anyone know any other good Korean TV shows for guys? |

| A (male) friend of mine was really into "Giant." He said it's kind of long, but he's been enjoying it. |

| Many of my students seem to like one called Athena. I guess it has lots of guns in it (they like to act out scenes from the show). |

Athena: Goddess of War is supposed to be the sequel to IRIS. The nature of dramas means romance so you'll find that as a central theme to almost every drama. But there are some more "non-standard" Korean TV dramas.
My other recommendations:
Damo - this series pretty much kicked off the Korean traditional period type dramas but has more action and fighting than the others
Daemul - fictional story about getting the first female Korean president
Baker King, Kim Tak Gu - all about bread and lost heritage, really keeps you on the edge of your seat though (main actor became poster child for Dunkin Donuts haha)
On Air - a drama about making a drama
Pasta - about running and cooking pasta restaurant (after this drama a huge spike in small Italian bistros)
Coffee Prince - girl pretends to be a guy to get a job at the coffee shop and the owner falls in love with him (her) and the awkwardness that follows (this aired during the huge coffee shop explosion too)
Tazza - follows the movie by the same name about Korean "Hwatu" and gambling
--
My Lovely Kim Samsoon - it's more of the romance centered type of drama but it's rather unique because the acting is good and it's about an average typical girl not a hottie, or rich girl, etc. considered a classic hit drama
Soulmate - also centered about romance except the male protagonist doesn't believe in those "cheesy romances".
Boys Over Flowers - even as a guy i thought this was interesting, after all the Japanese original "Hana Dori Dango" was supposedly one of the most read manga ever printed.
Additionally, i highly recommend my favorite Japanese drama, "Nodame Cantabile" especially if you like classical music.
P.S. Make sure if you're buying box sets of these dramas off of a place like YesAsia that you get either the Taiwan or Hong Kong versions as the Korean versions don't have English subtitles. And don't get the VCD's as the quality is complete crap. |

| I saw previews for one called "야차" on TV and at the movies this weekend. Looked pretty epic, and my students today said it was only for adults. |

Athena: Goddess of War, as mentioned is airing now. (SBS Mon/Tues)
It's a spin-off to IRIS. Same world but different characters.
You can probably find the episodes you missed online.
Here's a websites with re-caps:

As for something else to try, if you're ok with historical stories, maybe Jumong. I never saw it, but it's based on this story:

Iris is the best one I've seen so far....except for the last two minutes. I'm currently about half way through "Chuno:Slavehunter" and it's really, really good. It has romance in it, but it's much more action driven. Lots of amazing fights and just an amazing production value. It's set during the Qing (Ming) Dynasty, so it's psuedo historical for a change of pace. (I say psuedo because I'm not certain how accurate it is, but it's a nice change of pace from all the overly cutesy high school love themes....)
I'm watching Chuno on Hulu. |

Hi all. First time poster.
I second Chuno if you don't mind period stuff. It's all about the chase and excessive flex-flex muscles. Women do exist , but there are plenty of fight scenes to make up for their presence. More seriously, the visuals are amazing, and Jang Hyuk, the lead actor, delivers a fantastic performance as the tortured and weary Lee Dae Gil. |
