Quite the derogatory thread title IMO.

Hopefully that guy browses the forum. I'd like to ask him about one or two of his activities.

Tried to search him on Facebook to give kudos but nothing.

not meant to be. Something to stir the lazy eye browsing thru many posts. I root for the man. Found some of his ideas useful and have already used some of them in my own classes when possible. That tire around the waist is a little unseemly though Wink . I was also dead serious when I said he represents the most discriminated against segment of the NET society, partially because of creeps like Schertzer (see below) .

Quote:
Shall we give you a few years and check back?

absolutely. what age would you suggest? that tire will never be there, although other problems may appear that Mr. Campbell doesn't have to wrestle with, like alopecia Crying or Very sad

Quote:
The article was a bit misleading, however, as more than fifty teachers received the exact same award from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (minimum two teachers per district with twenty-five districts).

didn't see that. Btw, did Schertzer get one. He's an old fat guy and according to him easily one of the best teachers in Korea.

and creepy. Just look at the pic.

Isn't Steve Shirtlifter down in Thailand these days????

I think that the Busan OE finally got sick of him "owning the room" and so he moved on to greener pastures (where his classroom awesomeness would be better appreciated).

Oops - hold on, that's me.

kind of refreshing actually, but Mr. Campbell obviously knew what he was doing teaching wise before coming here.

Think he'll be replaced in a year or two?

Who thinks teaching ability has anything to do with receiving an award? It is all about making friends (and being a political pawn, i.e. sucking up). This is not necessarily a bad thing; it means that he is good at office politics. It could also mean that the school values foreigners. It is really difficult to know for certain without knowing the situation. Regardless, congrats to the Atlanta native.

Congrats to Campbell. Looks like he has the experience and the drive to teach and have fun in a foreign country even after years and years of doing it in the states.

Old? Some of my best HS teachers were older than 40.

All of my university professors were over 40 and most in their 50's.

Remember, this guy is teaching high school, not kindy, hagwon mish mash, or elementary PS.

true. I think every single one of my best HS teachers was over 40. (and almost all of them were over 35 period, with exception of a young Jesuit I had for ethics class) one of them was in fact in his sixties and he may have been the best of them all.

I meant "old" in terms of your average NET profile Wink

maybe. Somehow though, Campbell doesn't strike me as the Korean suckup type. And one can be judicious at covering one's ass office politics wise without inhaling air and "sucking".

The average NET profile is getting younger. I guess this is because younger teachers are cheaper and not because they are better teachers.

Frankly, I would've been surprised if the teacher of the year award went to some 24 year old elementary school NET teacher with 2 years of ESL experience and a degree in psychology.

It makes perfect sense that a veteran teacher received the award.

I doubt he comes here for the usual advice; but if you are reading this: "congrats again Mr. Campbell."

Also, none of my great high school teachers looked like Brad Pitt or Angelina. So, I don't really see the problem with the extra pounds.

Five or so years ago, most of the teachers I met abroad were in their 30's and 40's. They seemed to get along quite well. It was nice having a drink with a guy who wasn't complaining about his class of 5th graders.

The economy and Korea's recent tendency to hire younger, cheaper teachers has forced most of them to flee to China, Taiwan, or Vietnam.

Not that young teachers are bad.... I'm pretty sure a 22 year old is better with a classroom of kindergarten kids than Mr. Campbell would be. Put that same 22 year old in an all boys' high school.... Well, there would be a learning curve, to say the least.

As has already been stated, Mr. Campbell was one of more than fifty (50+) teachers that received the award for 2010 from SMOE. Teachers from 24 to over 54 were recognized within their respective districts.

I had thought that a few of the winners would have commented on this thread, but perhaps only a few of them use this site.

Not sure what to make of that.

Maybe some 1st year teacher (no prior experience at all) will step forward and claim to have received "an award".

In the end, it doesn't matter. The Korea is shifting toward cheaper, younger, inexperienced teachers even in the face of Mr. Campbell's success.

Two years ago, there was a similar article with commentary from an MIT grad., who was teaching at KIST (Korea's MIT). No one who mattered, cared. Nothing changed.

Back on topic, I'd be surprised if anyone under 30 received one of these many awards. It's possible, of course.

The guy is a former teacher from back in the States. He brings expertise and experience.

He also probably knows how to play the game.

I do wish they'd higher older people. Frankly most people I talk to under the age of 35 are, well, dumber, than those over 35. There is a serious generation gap in the educational quality of people.

Play 'categories' with people under 35 and over 35 with things that aren't movie based or sex based, but academic based. The gap is staggering. Not to mention the conversation skills, especially in a group setting involving people of varying backgrounds.

Yes, more older people, fewer youngens. Boot to the whippersnappers hooray for fat old guy.

I must say this whole "he's fighting the man" line is odd considering the man is giving him a prize.

I've met Mr. Campbell. He's a professional and a great guy. I enjoyed meeting him a lot, and I've learned a lot from the article as well as his blog.
