If S. Korea doesn't get knocked out by Iran they'll have Japan to contend with. Still i think they can put forth a pretty strong chance to take the cup. What do ya'll think? And where will you be watching it? |

Won't be watching, but found it interesting that Korea hasn't won it in about 50 years. Thought it was pretty much a no-brainer they'd win it every time. |

Strange indeed. You'd think Saudi Arabia or Iraq would make games competitive in the World Cup, but not the case.
Check out the winners of the African cup. You'd think Egypt would be a decent team, beating the likes of Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast, but the last time they made the World Cup was 1990. |

Hey, even Greece won the European Championships.
Egypt actually have a pretty good team these days, but they choked immensely in the last WC qualifiers against Algeria. If Egypt had been in Algeria's place in the World Cup I fancy they woulda got out of that rubbish group. England were absolutely woeful. In 2006, they had Ivory Coast and Cameroon in their same qualifying group, and only the top team could qualify, African qualifying is pretty cut-throat, compared to say Concacaf, which is a complete joke. Personally, I would merge concacaf and conmebol into one confederation, so USA and Mexico don't get a free ticket to the World Cup every four years. But I digress.
Japan should be able to win the tournament. Don't have huge expectations for my side (Australia). We could win it if everything falls into place, but I'd be pleased with a semi-final finish (and disappointed with anything less). South Korea also have a big chance. Not sure what to make of the Saudis this tournament, they've been pretty dreadful the last four years. I'll wait to see how they go against Syria. Uzbekistan are a definite darkhouse, but I don't expect any of the other three teams in that group to do much. China and Kuwait were both shocking last night.
Group D is a big enigma. Any one of the four teams could go on a run in the knock-out stages if they get into form. I'd say Iran and North Korea are the most likely, but Iran haven't been themselves in recent years. Iraq still have their stars from the last tournament present, and UAE, though traditionally an underachiever in the Gulf, have had some awesome youth teams coming through recently (the only Middle Eastern team that seems to be keeping up with the East at youth level lately), so they could surprise. |
