| a lot of my students say that its because the precipitation in the air whether it be rain or snow carries down the pollution in the air. sorta like acid rain but in this case, acid snow |

It's weird how people seem to relate this, like almost every single topic, to culture.
People here often limit things to being Korean, when I almost 100% of the time know of none-korean experiences that are the same.
I've seen people use Umbrellas in the snow in the UK. I've also seen people not use umbrellas.
I've yet to see a korean use one, actually. |

Stop your arrogant speculations - I have traveled to a lot of countries (northern and southern) and have never seen people carrying umbrellas in the sun on a massive scale like here. I've known some individuals who had to do it for health reasons, but I have never seen such an obsession with umbrellas like in Korea. |

How long have you been here? Where I'm at it's more or less ubiquitous that you take an umbrella out when it snows. And we both live in Anyang, which makes me think you're simply not looking. |

Agreed, the volume seems greater here... but c'mon. You've travelled (don't be so American  ) to a lot of countries and haven't seen a siginifcant number of people using them?
I'm not even travelling anymore and I see a lot of people using them.
And I will not stop the arrogant speculations. I am clearly better than everyone else. |

I've seen a ton of parasols in the SEA but I've never seen the ubiquitous rocking of the snow umbrella prior to Korea. |

it only makes sense to wear a hat to keep the snow off your head. I think it is just windier where I'm from so umbrellas aren't useful for snowstorms. also people bundle up and wear clothes that keep the weather off them.
Never thought of carrying an umbrella when it is below zero degrees. Just wonder how it could rain myself. Umbrellas aren't very helpful when riding a motorcycle. I have seen cyclists here do it though. |

| I voted yes because I do here. I never did in Canada, but I may when I go back there. It's nice not to get soaked from the snow. I expect a lot of strange looks, but i think it's kind of weird that we don't use umbrellas. They really make winter walking more comfortable. |

I use umbrellas when it's snowing and not particularly windy. It's better than a hat, in my opinion. Guess I'm just a weirdo! XD |

I've never seen umbrellas used so much in any other culture either. When it's raining lightly and I opt to go without one I often find others giving me bizzare looks...
Now it's snowing ever so lightly and the umbrellas are out in full force and now forced to try my darnedest not to have one of my eyes poked out as almost no one is actually paying attention to what lies ahead of them. Insanity I tell you.
I think Korea is so obsessed with umbrellas in all weather as they seem to buy into a lot of myths hook line and sinker. Acid rain will not damage your hair or make you go bald and if you're that worried about the sun, some simple moisturizer with sun block is all you'll need. Actually a lot of Koreans I've met who do the umbrella in the sun thing are applying some form of sun block as well. It's just so weird... but again, this is a land where doctors will prescribe medicine based on science then the pharmacist will give you some kind of tree root to munch on... and lets not forget fan death.
Coming from Canada... seeing umbrellas used like this in winter is just bizzare. |
