Not sure where to put this topic - current events, off-topic, or maybe even the technology forum? I'll let the Mods sort it out.
Anyway, if you are like me, and wondering how this is possible after the Giffords shooting, this article is pretty interesting and informative.
The main gist of it:
Quote: |
"Fortunately, in this situation, it appears the bullet stayed on one side of the brain or grazed the surface instead of going through the brain itself," Field said. If a bullet passes from one side of the brain to the other, he added, it's rare for a patient to survive.
"There are structures that are in the middle of the brain that are the core to our vitality the brain stem, the basal ganglia if they're damaged, that prevents the brain from being able to control things like body temperature, hormones, heart rate, breathing.
"Essentially, if you think of [Giffords' brain] like a computer, the disc drive has been damaged, but the mainframe of the computer is, hopefully, still intact."

Edit: I forgot to add, check out what they do with the part of the skull that they remove - it's a little bizarre.
