God does not kick people out of church when a phone rings. Just have the phone turned off and move on. Creating a punishment system and implementing it creates more of a disruption than the actual phone.

Cell phones in class?

It's OK.

Social life is more important than English.

Maybe you teach businessmen. Should you take their phones because you have some stupid rule? If you don't take their phone, what about housewives? Maybe one of you university students is married......

I make them answer in ENGLISH!!! I explain the policy in the first class and have very few problems. If I catch a student sending a text message (hey, what do they THINK I think when both hands are under the desk???? Wink ) I take the phone until the end of class. These are uni students BTW.

As I mentioned, if a phone rings, then they owe 500 won. If it vibrates, then they may quietly check who it is and tell them they'll call back later. They have 20 seconds. Any longer! 500 won. If it's a medical emerge~ take the call outside.

Out of 7 classes and about 200 students, I made 1000 won so far this semester. Last Semester, maybe 3000 won. Not many phone interuptions. I like that.

BTW, one Canadian I know takes a phone when he hears it ring and tosses it out the window! Shocked

Cool discussion.

I close my eyes and think of a better place, a better job, and a movie star aura that was supposed to be better than this....

I plain let it go... I don't care... the other students shut the chick or dude up. If it happens a second time I take the phone from them and hold it until I have a little talk with them in my office. On a side note, there once was teacher at my school who threw a phone out of the window. No joke. Shocked

Naw. One mark off if I hear a phone ring or vibrate, three marks if the answer it.

I've heard, in my credit classes, two phones so far this semester.

My earlier trollish posts on this were sarcastic.
If someone's phone rings I normally cast them a glance and they shut the thing up. I've never had someone talking in class on one.
if they did, of course I'd love to freak out and smash the thing into tiny pieces. But of course I'm not allowed to do that....
