Free Relocation, Now Free Housing?
The revelation that during negotiations about relocating the United States military installation currently located in Seoul's Yongsan neighborhood the US demanded that Korea build it 1,200 new housing units in Osan and Pyeongtaek shows you exactly how unprincipled and unequal the negotiations were. The US has taken the position that the Korean government should pay for everything, and even wants Korea to construct housing for US service members and their families.

Right............

So the US should build the housing and then when the wind changes direction the Korean gov't could just ask them to leave and sell the houses to the public ?

Look how many facilities are on Yongsan, who do you think maintained them and who is going to get them when the US pulls back to Pyongtaek
?

I belive the plans are to demolish "most" of the existing structures. For the most part the area is to be made into a park (yeah right) while a small percentage is to be kept for commercial and housing use.

As for what would happen if the US pulled out. Well, I doubt they'd pull out ENTIRELY but if they did pull out the majority of their forces we'd probably find that Korea has grown into a "real" nation and able to take care of itself.

Help is welcome, but a houseguest who doesnt leave is just bad. Don't get me wrong, i'm not for the full withdrawl of US forces Korea BUT I think they would be well advised to re-evaulate their reason and structure here.

Korean civilians maintain them FYI. However I believe it was with the help of MWR and The Relief Fund (not sure exact name) that those new barracks were built.

I think it's fair the Koreans pay for the new barracks/rec centers...the soldiers have literally paid for those at youngsan etc.

Whoa, that wasnt fair at all! Are you Korean or Kyopo?

The U.S. Army isnt forcing the Koreans to let them stay. When the Koreans ask them to leave they will leave.
