Why do hogwan owners continually try to screw the English teachers over?

You stop and think about it...it cost anywhere from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000+ for a recruiters fee, about 800,000 for the one way ticket to korea, the little fees, immigration, etc...

why do they always try to screw us over for a few thousand won a month?

You would think that they would appreciate the fact they have a teacher that is punctual, hard working and dedicated. BUT NOOOOO! It is always give us more, more, more......then KABOOM!

I have never seen such stupidity in my 42 years of life. Are all hogwan owners so stupid? I know they arent all stupid as I have had good and bad...I am just wondering if you have other thoughts!

I think from the perspective of a bad hagwon owner we are a giant pain in the ass who is super expensive and hard to please. When they finally piss us off enough to leave they just rack it up as our stubborn stupidity. We are a necessary evil to evil bosses.

I think about the morality involved with someone who opens a business for money, but who has no interest in the field.

Is money justification for immorality? Is it the highest moral purpose?

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I advise you to try and get over your anger. Don't expect your boss to make "smart" decisions, it's not going to happen. Rolling Eyes Hagwan owners are usually, new to the field and as such know very little about how to run their businesses. Once they find out how tough it is, they do one of 2 things, they sell it to another new star-eyed wonjang nim or they start to realize that the easiest way to make a profit is to SCREW THE TEACHER.

It's all about image and very little about substance. Foreign teachers are an easy scapegoat, when a parent complains, the boss points at the foreign teacher "bad wayguk" and the parent agrees, thus saving face for the school and the director.

If you are trying to find a director who is going to act reasonably or exibit something close to a Western style logic, I think you will be disappointed.
It's sad, but you can't do much about it. Shocked

I wish you the best of luck with your job, you will need it!

Cheers

It isn't just their inability to see beyond what they want to pay, irrespective of the savings they make in retaining teachers. It also is when does the experience we have and its worth to the hogwan flatline. We endeavour to always do our best for the school retain as many students as we can, by being professional and challenging our students. The down side is owners and directors do not or can not charge parents extra because we are their childrens teacher. A newbie on 1.7, experienced on 2.3, students pay the same monthly stipend. That is the bugger of it all. It would be nice if our worth and experience was appreciated by owners and parents alike. Smile
