I know that GEPIK usually reimbursed you for your flight to Korea. But, are they also willing to pay for your airline ticket upfront? Does anyone know if Korvia is willing to pay for your GEPIK airline ticket upfront for you?

Hi Anners-GEPIK will not pay for your airfare upfront, but your recruiting company may. I don't know about Korvia, but my recruiter did (Teach Esl Korea). I'm not plugging my recruiter-they were alright-but it was nice not to have to deal with getting a refund. I would ask Korvia up front if they do-my recruiter used the fact that they did as a selling point. Good luck!

I'm going through Korvia as well and I'm paying my own airfare on the basis that it is refunded within the first month of arrival.

It "should" be refunded soon after you arrive, within a few days. If you wait a month, you will be letting them take advantage of teachers for a month.

Its in the contract.

That's what they say, and that's what they do.

What is "it"? "It" is in every contract?

Could you be more vague? Laughing What do they say? Who does what?

I have worked for public schools and hagwons, and not all the same terms are in the contracts. It is between you and the school what to decide. In this case, airfare.

Sometimes they pay it upfront, sometimes you get reimbursed. However, the only reason for you to pay for the airfare is to show you are serious about taking the job. They don't want to pay for a flight and gamble that you might not board the plane or miss the flight. I understand this, but after you have arrived, moved in, and started to work for them, they need to give you what is owed to you.

Article 9(Airfare and Resignation)
1. The airfare for the Employee's flight to Korea shall be considered as a support
for the Employee's entrance into Korea for the purpose of employment as a GEPIK
teacher. The Employee shall receive the reimbursement of the airfare by the
Employer within a month (30 days) upon working at the school, based on the actual
purchasing price of an economy class flight available from the Employee's
residence to Incheon International Airport in Korea.
a. The Employee from outside of Korea: A one-way economy ticket from the
Employee's residence to Incheon International Airport will be reimbursed within a
month (30 days) from working at the school. Upon the completion of the Contract, a
one-way return trip to the airport of his/her home country will be reimbursed or
directly purchased only when the trip occurs within the first ten (10) days as of
completion of employment.
b. If the Employee obtains his/her E2 visa by visiting the nearest country from Korea,
its round trip airfare is reimbursed by the Employer within a month (30 days) from
working at the school. Upon the completion of the Contract, a one-way airfare is
provided pursuant to the foregoing 1-a.

and

6. The Employer shall provide the Employee, for the first GEPIK contract
assignment term only, 300,000 KRW as settlement allowance within the first month
(30 calendar days) of working at the school. The Employee shall spend the money
to buy commodities other than those set forth under Article 12-5.

So they have up to 30 days. I'd still try to get it ASAP and not wait for them to get around to it.

To my knowledge, Korvia does not pay up front. Instead they offer this:

http://www.korvia.com/reservation/

I haven't heard of any public schools not paying out on airfare within the first month. That is one of the major advantages of public schools over hagwons.

Don't you mean advantage of hagwon over public school?

Based on what you are saying and the previous poster you have to wait up to a month before getting reimbursed.

With a hagwon, they "might" pay for it upfront. If not, then yes, it may not seem as secure as a public school. However, I would first work with whomever will pay upfront, then either school which will pay within the first week.

There really is no reason to allow for these schools to make you wait a month after you have already put in 12 weeks to get the CBC and gone through all the visa steps.

My point was, I've heard many stories of hagwon owners dragging their feet to reimburse airfare for over a month. I've also seen quite a few hagwons that don't even offer a pre-purchased ticket OR reimbursement. So, although you have to fork it out upfront, you WILL get your airfare money back from public schools. (Provided you don't fail your drug/health test!)

So yes, I meant the advantage of public schools over hagwons that don't provide prepaid airfare.

But I agree with you about waiting that long. They have "up to" one month. My PS paid me after 4 days.
