Hi,

I'm looking to transition from a teacher in Korea to a grad student next semester. To supplement my income I want to teach English when I'm not attending classes (I expect to have significant free time ...).

Has anyone taught their way through university here in Korea? Would you recommend teaching private lessons, or finding work at an academy, or perhaps both?

If you've got experience teaching while going to school, was it difficult to find work? What were your experiences with pay, etc.

I've never taught private lessons in the 2 years I've been in Korea and I've never worked in a hagwon so I'm not sure what to expect ...

Any visa worries?

Yes. It's illegal.

There's a reason there is a student visa and a work visa. You could always try to teach on a student visa but it is definitely illegal and you are going to be jeopardizing yourself if you do.

Foreign students (D2-holders) will be allowed to work part-time in Korea on the following conditions:
- Should be recommended by a college professor
- Have completed at least six months of study in regular college program and still enroll in a Korean
college
- Working time allowed: within 20 hours per week in session (during semesters), and unlimited out-of-
session (during vacation)

Eligible work areas
1) Areas that can be regarded as being closely related to the study subjects of applying students
2) Areas commonly associated with students
Ex) translation, interpretation, library assistant, landscaping and lawn maintenance, facility
maintenance, restaurant and hospitality field, office assistant, research activities which are
temporary such as research project carried out at the same time with study, teaching assistants
(temporary) or laboratory assistants.
※ Employment at English villages or English camps such as shop keepers, restaurant employees
and assistant program staff.
3) Foreign language teachers at educational institutes including private institutes (Applicable only for
those with qualifications as foreign language instructors)
