So does anyone get offended when they whip out the ol' ARC and right there on top it says "waygookin" in Hangul?

That word does not mean foreigner. Maybe literally, if you break down the meaning of each character, but not in practice. It means "white person" in practice.

If anyone disagrees, think of the last time a Korean called a Chinese or a Japanese person a waegukin rather than a junggukin. When Koreans say "Waegukins can't eat spicy food" they are not talking about Thais and Chinese people, they are talking about white people. Do Koreans call people who have lived in America all of their life yet happen to have Korean ancestry "waegukin"?

Or, one could argue that it means "non-Asian raced person", rather than white person.

With a name like mine, I guess it's only appropriate I chime in. Ha ha. Actually, a white person is 백인. But anyone who seems or looks foriegn is weigookin. Anytime someone seems surprised to see me and says: "weigookin", I say no and call myself "hangookin" and ask them if they are "weigookin". Sometimes, I ask if they are phillipine - in. They really love that. It's kind of fun to screw with people. Guess it's how I cope. Why get pissed? You can't fight 50 million people....

That was a useless post.

I think it's telling that outisde of Korea, they still refer to non-Koreans as 외국인. In this case, the Koreans are "outside country", but it doesn't matter. You either have the 민족 or you don't.

Hard to believe this idiotic argument and thread continues.

You ARE a foreigner. You may (and will) be called a foreigner. Why? because you are one.

the word doesn't elicist any reaction in any country outside of say US, Canada, (and potentially UK and Australia) because in those countries..

everyone is a de facto RECENT "foreigner", hence the stupid "offense" some people take to it.

You will stand in a line at any immigration booth around the world in a line that's labeled "FOREIGNER".

do you know why? because you're a foreigner that's why.

now go find something else to whine about.

People who come from countries that have actually had immigration know what the history of that word is, and what has happened to their societies because of nativism, ethnocentrism, and racism.

If you want to keep your head in the sand and play legalistic semantic games, have fun. I'm sure you can keep it going for a few more pages.

When translated the closest word, and most suitable word, is foreigner but in the end it's a different language, history of the word is different, anyways continue on with this 'debate'...

Then why say it when outside of Korea? The hanja indicates otherwise.

Actually, as some have pointed out, 외국인 doesn't mean "foreigner" it means "non-Korean". I'm not particularly offended, but it's the same as if I were to refer to people as either "white" or "non-white". The inherent racism of that should be pretty obvious.

I think "non-Korean" has the potential to be even more offensive though. I -could- call someone "non-white" and still believe that they are 100% American (my countryman, that is). I doubt that you could both be 외국인 and Korean, even if you were a born and raised citizen of Korea.

This. I don't really have a problem with the term itself, it's a loan word that the Chinese use as well. It's how and when it's used, to say nothing of the pointing and the "Waegugin I-Da" BS that they use when you are sitting there looking them straight in the face.

You're apparently new here. There is a certain contingent of people here who are, frankly, just looking for an excuse. The slightest difference from the way things are done back home means that everyone here is a xenophobic racist out to get them and no amount of logic would convince them otherwise.
The way some people act around here I wouldn't be surprised if they don't spend their nights crouched in the corner with a baseball bat sweating in fear until the sun comes up again.
