Is there any place in Seoul for couples to go for premarital counseling? I would prefer a western trained counselor. Thanks in advance for any information.

Getting relationship counseling from a Korean would be like taking skiing lessons from a Saudi Arabian.

Some people will jump at any chance to bash Koreans for anything.....

OP - Would you be open to going to a church pastor? If so, most churches that offer English service probably have a pastor that is either not Korean or is Korean, but has lived abroad extensively.

Is your fiance Korean?

Even though the majority of the country is desert, it actually snows in Saudi Arabia... You shouldve chose Australia or something, it doesnt snow there.

This must come as particularly distressful news to the owners/shareholders of the handful of ski resorts in Oz, though not as stress- inducing as trying to recruit a good Saudi ski instructor.

OP: There is a forum member named Harpeau, who provides counseling services for Korean/Western couples. He is located in Seoul. Having never used his service ( or even met him), I can't comment on his effectiveness or credentials- so please don't interpret this as a recommendation.

However, his website contains a potentially useful resource page for you, and lists Korean based counsellors who are western trained. The name of his company is Seoularium Counseling Services.

Good luck.

I wasn't "bashing" Koreans by suggesting that a Westerner probably wouldn't have anything to gain by visiting a Korean relationship counselor. There are many things that Koreans and Westerners believe similarly about....the nature of a romantic relationship is not one of these things.

Counselor: So what seem to be some of your issues?
Woman: My fiance doesn't like to help around the house.
Counselor: Yes, all men are like this. As the woman, you should do most or all of the housework.
Woman: Hmm, OK, well, I'd really like him to drink less, especially during the week. He often comes home from work wasted drunk.
Counselor: You must understand that his job is very stressful. And how about you sir?
Man: Every month she racks up $1,000 on the credit card buying ridiculous crap that she doesn't need.
Counselor: This is called "shopping", women like this. You must understand.
Man: I don't know. I just sometimes feel like she doesn't appreciate me.
Counselor: Maybe you need to do more nice things for her. Try carrying her bag and buying her cutie Teddy bears. And you, why don't you crochet your fiance a little pillow that has his hand phone number on it so that he can put it next to his windscreen. Now, the two of you get out of here and go buy yourselves matching pink track suits.

A LOT of Australians ski. Perhaps not IN Australia, but it wouldn't be difficult at all to find an Australian ski instructor.

But there are many fine Australian skiers and snowboarders in the Olympics.

yes there are shrinks here and some who post here, just be careful and do some homework first as some of the "therapists" here are true whack jobs and are in need of help themselves. you might wind up in worse shape than before

Isn't premarital counselling a bit pessimistic?

Why would it be pessimistic? I've never met a single married person who told me marriage was easy. Premarital counseling doesn't mean anything is wrong. It's taking a proactive step to discuss issues that might come up in a marriage in a supportive setting. I have a family member who had premarital counseling with his wife and they had been together for 10 years. And yes, they are still together.

If you get married in a church, most pastors will require you go to some kind of "counseling" with them before they perform your service.

It is a good idea to do in my opinion and experience.
