Haven't been home (USA) in almost two years. Going back for a couple weeks and want to get gifts for family. Really have no clue what to get them. I guess I could go the route of Insadong and just get trinkets and that s- but really don't know what to get. My family is the type that likes the gesture more than the item but don't want to just buy the stuff that you see at every little souvenir store.
Any ideas? What have you bought for folks back home? |

Go to your local supermarket and find a ton of amazing gifts! a can of bondeggi!  a great gag gift I've sent home. A bottle of aloe juice or shrimp potato chips. Oh, open your eyes and see it all as a newbie again. lots of interesting stuff. |

The supermarket route is great for lots of laughs.
In addition to what others said:
-seafood flavored snacks (squid chips, dried squid, pressed fish)
-pine flavored toothpaste
-smoky bacon chips
-crunky balls (the name make people laugh, too bad they discontinued Crunky Nude Balls, those were a hit)
-Konglish stuff like stationery, pencil cases
-those goofy re-useable hand warmers |

| When I did the supermarket shop for people back home, I just made myself think about the store the same way as I did when I first landed here. It's interesting how much "weird" stuff you'll find that you've gotten used to over time. |

I'm totally doing this as a romantic wedding gift for some high school friends of mine ^^
Hey, does anybody know what kind of gifts I should get for some little babies and toddlers? I'm going back to Canada soon, and I have the following kids to give a trinket to: a 4 year old girl, a 4 year old boy, a 2 year old boy, a 9 mo baby and a newborn. Do you think if I go to Insadong, I can find cute little trinkets for them all (or for mom?) |

For the kids trainer chopsticks and those hot packs that you boil first then snap the little piece of metal inside, they're always cute shaped like popporo and the like. Find one of those kid's stationary stores and you can get lotsa different candies and snacks. Those twistable crayons that everyone calls colored pencils are something I've never seen at home myself, and think would be great for most kids.
OP:
Dick Sticks are a great ridiculously named snack that are sure to produce giggles back home. I found them at the Lotte Mart next to Seoul Station about a year ago.
Some Korean herbals/pharmaceuticals could be nice if people you know are into that. Ginseng. Vitamin C drinks. My girlfriend got this white powder for my dad that's good for soothing your throat(chronic smokers apparently like it a lot). Some of those super-hangover drinks.
I think those hooks with the resin on the back that you melt and then stick to the wall are pretty awesome and I've never seen them at home. I've gotten packs of them for a few of my relatives. |
