Lately my torrent download speeds are atrocious. A quick scan of my current downloads reveals that I'm downloading 5 torrents: of a total of 331 seeders, I'm connected to 9 of them, and a mere 13 leechers of a total of 1403! That's about as good as it gets nowadays. Most of the time they sit around downloading in the single digit, or even single decimal kB/s, once in a blue moon they'll pop up to around a mB/s.

It's a little upsetting. It's like my computer finally manages to start cranking the download and BAM, I lose my connection to the fastest seeds. Could my ISP be doing this on purpose? One particularly large (47gB) obnoxious torrent with 250 seeds and 1300 leechers will jump ten percent over a matter of hours, then revert to downloading in fractions of a kB per second for days. After a week it's at 50%, but it's ETA most often hovers somewhere between 3 years and infinity.

Blargh! Advice?

What torrent program are you using? If you're not already using it, I'd recommend uTorrent. Try change the settings to increase the number of connections or increase the upload speed.

If you use a router, do you know if your ports are forwarded for torrents?

This is almost always a port forwarding issue. Sorry I can't help any further as opening ports on routers is beyond me.

Google for an online guide.

Does the torrent program say you're connected?

I've been having similar results in the last 6 months on Hanaro. Go here to check if your ISP is throttling your torrents.

KT Lite here and always between 8 ~ 11 MB/s. Crazy fast on public trackers.

Ha HA! This would likely be a port forwarding problem. It started after I started downloading over my new wireless router. I hope this isn't a pain in the butt to fix.

Edit: And I'm screwed. I've got a Samsung router. There are zero English guides for forwarding ports with the thing. I may have to contact Samsung and ask for English instructions. I did manage to discover that it supports it anyhow.

Here you go port forwarding made simple.

There's a paid version and a free with the free one you can forward i think 4 ports or so, so it will do the trick.

My router's not on the list for that program, but I found a badly translated manual for it that I think I can glean enough information from to fix the problem anyway. According to portforwarding.com UPnP support will automatically forward ports, and my router supports it, I just have to find it and turn it on under a bunch of Korean menus.

it might help: I used chrome to access my router and used the auto translate feature to navigate the korean firmware, granted you'll need a guide in english that is possibly transferable to your samsung router setup, or buy a new router!

Shazaam!

I got UPnP enabled on my router, uTorrent instantly appeared on the list of programs using it and a minute later all of my downloads are about ten times faster than they were and climbing.

If anyone else has the same problem, just click "UPnP" on the menu on the left hand of the router settings homepage, and then make sure it says "사용" on the left at the top in blue. If it says "사용안함" then it's disabled, like mine was. If so, just click the "사용" button on the top right, and then click the button at the bottom to refresh the list of effected programs.

uTorrent has UPnP enabled by default.

My torrents are now running about 30 times as fast as they were in the time it took me to type this.

Edit: The backlash being that the huge torrent with three times as many leechers as seeds is now uploading much faster than it's downloading.

Thanks, but I got the right IP.......in my case it was 192.168.219.1 But LG Xspeed have password-protected it.

I'll eventually just get one of their guys to come out and do it for me.

in most cases in Korea the default password is 0000. (zeroX4). But shhh... it's a secret.

In case of a site specific to your set-up it's likely your phone number.

Yay. I got 25% of 50gigs last night. For anyone trying to follow my instructions, I'm using a Samsung SWW-5400 router...
