I thought it might be helpful and interesting to gain some community info on teaching conditions and compensation packages for 1st year teachers. I created a survey that seeks to find information that might be pertinent to job searchers and 1st year teachers.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TQ6XHNZ

There is always a lot of discussion on work conditions, prefered candidates, and types of schools for 1st year teachers.

So my questions seek to answer what kinds of candidates are being hired based on experience, visa type, age, race, nationality etc...And also, what kinds of compensation packages they are receiving.

I am not an expert on making surveys (or anything else really) so please don't fry me for the way I worded questions and answers.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these 10 questions!

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TQ6XHNZ

I will post results in a few days (or you can see them for yourself by completing the survey!)

I learned two things from this:

1) No one thinks that they're a hideous beast.

2) A lot of people get some seriously crappy vacation.

You must know a lot of Australians, or be one yourself. 14%?!? As many Australians as Canadians?

Jr,

If you would care to share the stats from this, I've got a degree in statistics and I'd love to poke around in your survey results to see if the expected correlations with white/attractive and higher wage/better situations show up.

Let me know if you are willing to share the info. You can PM me or just reply on the board.

Might just be a time zone thing since it hasn't been up all that long. I'd guess it would even out over the week.

i'd say the survey is slightly flawed. one being the vacation option. 10-19 days. i'd say 90% of the people who answered yes to that have 10 days vacation, as is standard in a lot of hagwon contracts.

There is a difference between those that include the national holidays and those that don't (CDI).

A question about who did/didnt get health & pension benefits would have been interesting.

Umm, most hagwon contracts I've seen say 10 calendar days vacation, not including national holidays. I'm aware CDI might pull that stunt, but back when they used to pay well hourly, I'd say that was a trade-off that people willfully chose. Either way, the survey doesn't really encompass that.

If we're including national holidays and random days the school is closed for no reason, I'd change my answer to a higher number. But that's not really a "vacation."

I'm just saying it might've been useful to do 0-5, then 6-10, then 11-20. the numbers may have been more meaningful then. I think there are a lot more people getting 10 days vacation than there are people getting 0-5 days. 2 weeks vacation being standard in the US, although it is pretty sucky that you are usually forced to take one week in summer and one in winter...and they also sometimes pull some crap where it's Tuesday-Monday or the like so you get 7 rather than 9 days

Sorry, veering a bit off-topic here but still regards vacation.

For comparison sake, in Canada, a first-year employee is entitled to zero vacation. In the 2nd year after continuous employment they get 2 weeks that they prepaid for themselves via a 4% pay deduction.

Other countries similar? Be thankful for what you get.

Yeah, with the basic (free) account, I'm really hamstrung on my options.

I will try to get them. That's really what I am after too. I don't know if it will let me access it like that on the free account, unless I pay to upgrade to premium....(kinda broke right now though!) If I can get them, I will shoot you a PM with the password.

I thought this was really interesting! Thanks for making it. Smile

I was shocked about the vacation too. This year with EPIK I got 10 vacation days in the winter, 12-13 in the winter (can't remember), 10 days for renewing, plus the ~14 national holidays. So all in all 47 days vacation? Around 6.5 weeks? Freaking awesome. This really is a great job, haha.
