|
|
I have been offered a Gepik contract from a public school for after working with a recruiter. Does that mean that I have got the job or is Gepik the final decision maker? I'm a bit worried as my transcripts will show that I am not the smartest cookie on earth and my reference letters aren't sealed...
Thanks in advance~ |

gepik is merely a conduit, an umbrella organization.
The school is the decision maker on all things, not gepik (so long as they accept and conform to gepik rules/contract)
it's the school that decides to hire you, fire you, renew you or not renew you, not gepik.
you have the job. Congratulations. |

and you most probably don't have to go to the "GEPIK" orientation either - as your school employed you directly through the recruiter. |

Which orientation are you talking about? All new teachers are required to go to orientation (3 day/2 night workshops and team building), regardless if they are hired through GEPIK, a recruiter or directly to the school.
If you sign a GEPIK contract, you are a GEPIK teacher. Therefore, you go to the training. |

why would GEPIK turn you down if the school wants you? |

All you need to show is the diploma,,,and yes, I'd get working on sealed letters just in case they don't let you slide. They may do phone checks of references as well.
I'm sure there are public school teachers here with 'incomplete' documents as such as lack of sealed reference. These organizations don't have time to be descriminitive and check everyone thoroughly. |

I dont think GEPIK did that, I think SMOE did. The difference is that schools hire you directly in GEPIK, so it's less likely (though I hear it does happen) that they'll overhire. Well that and the fact that a lot of locations in GEPIK are NOT desirable (some of my friends in Gangwon-do get to Seoul faster than I can). |

GEPIK doesn't hire teachers directly anymore...ALL GEPIK teachers are hired via recruiters...and are therefore required to attend any seminars or training that GEPIK require them to attend...as per the contract. |

Thats strange.
I signed a new GEPIK contract directly with a school (which employed me via a recruiter) and was told I didn't have to go to any orientation/training.
Basically my current school finishes on Feb 28th and I start the next working day on March 2nd at the new GEPIK school.
(no orientation) |

I think you have to attend SOME sort of training during your contract time as part of a GPOE requirement. |

Right, there are 4 GEPIK orientations every year now (according to the orientation in Ocotober) You will go to one of the next two orientations. It is required by the POE that you receive a certain number of "training" hours every year. The online training counts towards it. The 2 nights of training you'll do will count. Then there are other cultural things you can do and attend open classes, etc... |

What is this? I know EPIK offers it. GEPIK has it, too? |

Yes, it was 16 (I think) online lessons about the Korean education system, culture, coteaching, powerpoint, lesson plan, etc...
Each lesson is about 30-45 minutes. Then you take a quiz after each lesson. Then you take a test at the end.
It had Carl, a bald guy who wears a different, awesome/ridiculous sweater in each lesson.
If it's your first time in Korea, I could see it as very helpful. If you've been here a while, its a good refresher. As someone who's been here a little while and married to Korean, I could have done without the Korean culture ones. But whatever. I learned a bit about how the education system is designed in Korea. I learned some good websites to get royalty free photos. |
