I have Spring camp from Monday the 14th to the 25th in the mornings. They want me to focus on reading and story telling more so than simply doing fun activities like in Winter camp. It will be the same 5th and 6th grade students I had during Winter camp so I already know that they are a great group of students with their excessive shyness and paranoid unwillingness to speak my only disappointment in them. I did one reading and writing activity in January with them, but they were quickly bored to death with it so I moved onto fun activities like making snowmen and snowflakes.
Any ideas on teaching reading and storytelling in camp? It's easy to teach academics during the semester, but I find student motivation for academic material difficult to conjure up during the vacation periods. I have a room full of English books, but they are mostly appealing to kindergarten through 3rd grade and not so interesting for the big kids. Help me please... |
